Alex Edler Announces Retirement; Set To Sign One-Day Contract With The Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks have announced their plans to honour defenceman Alex Edler this upcoming season. The franchise's all-time leader in games, goals, assists and points by a defenceman will sign a one-day contract with the Canucks before officially retiring from the NHL. Edler's retirement is scheduled for October 11, when Vancouver plays host to the Philadelphia Flyers.

In the press release, Edler wrote, "I am humbled and honoured to officially end my career and retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL. Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family."

Drafted 91st overall by the Canucks in 2004, Edler played 925 of his 1030 career games with Vancouver. He played a crucial role for the Canucks during their 2011 Stanley Cup Finals run, averaging 24:47 of ice time over the 25 games. On top of holding many of the franchise's record for a defenceman, Edler is also the franchise's leader in hits with 1432, as well as blocked shots with 1762.

Outside of his time with Vancouver, Edler played 105 games as a member of the L.A. Kings. He also represented Sweden at multiple tournaments, including the 2014 Winter Olympics, where he won Silver Medal. Lastly, Edler is one of eight players from his draft class to surpass the 1,000 games played mark, joining the likes of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin and Blake Wheeler, who also achieved the feat.
