Alcaraz vs Berrettini LIVE! Wimbledon 2023 latest results and updates as world number one wins on Centre Court
Alcaraz vs Berrettini LIVE!
Carlos Alcaraz sealed his place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a four-set win over Matteo Berrettini on Centre Court.
The final match of the day was a hugely-anticipated one, with Berrettini, a Wimbledon finalist two years ago, expected to provide a stern examination of Alcaraz’s grass-court credentials. The pair arrived on Centre Court knowing that, barring something truly extraordinary, the Wimbledon curfew would not prove a factor as it had for much of the first week of the tournament.
It was latest in a long line of tests Alcaraz has passed with flying colours, battling back from a set down to take control of the fourth-round match and, after a brief delay as the roof was closed, secure a 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 win that sets up a last-eight encounter with Holger Rune. The possibility of a final against Novak Djokovic remains a very real one.

Game, set and match!
20:55 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 Berrettini
No sign of any late drama here, Alcaraz two points away as he thunders down another first serve.
Two match points - Berrettini on the run, he can’t make the forehand pass. The Italian saves the first, superb return and Alcaraz can’t flick that back.
And there goes the second, Alcaraz to the net but the volley is long! Deuce. Third match point to come, but again Berrettini saves it!
Take four, Berrettini on the run can’t get the slice back.
TAKES THIS ONE! Berrettini wide with the backhand, and Alcaraz has his win!
Alcaraz breaks!
20:47 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 *5-3 Berrettini
Trouble! 0-30, Berrettini desperately needs to find a couple of first serves. Tick. Ace, his ninth of the night, down the T.
That though is far too good. Alcaraz throws himself into the forehand, Berrettini not even close to catching up with that.
Two break points - he needs just one! Berrettini off balance, pulls the forehand into the tramlines.
Alcaraz will serve for it.
Alcaraz piles the pressure on
20:44 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 4-3* Berrettini
And the pressure will be straight back on Berrettini!
Alcaraz holds to love, fist pumping to his box as he marches to his chair. Two games away from the quarter-finals - if Berrettini gets broken her, Alcaraz will serve for the match.
In the balance!
20:42 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 *3-3 Berrettini
Alcaraz on his knees as he flat-bats a return deep into the court. Self-preservation as much as anything.
Nothing he can do about that one, serve out wide and 40-15. Berrettini still right in this set, especially when that Alcaraz return lands just long to secure the hold.
Alcaraz back up and running
20:37 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 3-2* Berrettini
Forehand winner from Alcaraz to kick us off again, not one to be slowed down by a delay it would seem.
Same not quite true on the other side of the net, Berrettini with a couple of loose shots that land beyond the baseline, Alcaraz 40-0 up.
Shanked return from Berrettini, hold to love from the world number one.
20:34 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz to serve, as we get back underway under the roof.
Reminder of where we are - 2-2 in the fourth, Alcaraz two sets to one up. Just four games away from the quarter-finals...
Here we go!
20:30 , Matt Verri
Players are back out, roof is shut and we’ll be good to resume very shortly.
For once, we don’t have to worry about the Wimbledon curfew this evening. That’s still two and a half hours away - we’ve got something absolutely extraordinary in store if that becomes an issue!
Time for a swift warm-up.
Over on Court One...
20:27 , Matt Verri
Rune has battled past Dimitrov, to book his place in the quarter-finals.
The sixth seed will face the winner of this match between Alcaraz and Berrettini in the last-eight on Wednesday.

Roof is closed
20:22 , Matt Verri
There it is.
The Centre Court roof will be shut, so the players trudge off for a brief delay.
Should be back on in the next 10 minutes or so, for what Alcaraz will hope is a relatively swift conclusion to the match.
Remains on serve
20:21 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 *2-2 Berrettini
The roof remains open. For now.
Berrettini giving Alcaraz the runaround this game, a couple of delicate drop volleys and the Spaniard can’t get there.
Alcaraz has given up on things at 40-0, swings hard at the return and it’s comfortably long. Hold to love.
Roof o’clock?
20:16 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 2-1* Berrettini
Referee Gerry Armstrong looking increasingly interested - could have a delay soon as it gets darker over Centre Court and the roof is considered.
Superb forehand pass down the line from Alcaraz, fair to say he’s having no issues seeing the ball. He does, though, follow it up with a fifth double fault.
A very handy net cord for Berrettini, again he gets to 30-30. Think that backhand pass was going long, but Alcaraz takes no changes and puts the volley away at the net.
Whippef forehand, there’s the hold.
Berrettini responds
20:11 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 *1-1 Berrettini
Alcaraz, on the other hand, is posing a constant threat to the Berrettini serve.
Another deep return and that’s not coming back, as Berrettini desperately tries to scramble across. 30-30 - warning lights starting to flash again.
Glad I gave the Alcaraz return the big build-up - misfires with that one and Berrettini is on the board in the fourth.
Alcaraz up and running in the fourth
20:07 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 1-0* Berrettini
Berrettini still not able to do enough on return, second serve to attack there but instead he floats a backhand long. Not what was required at 15-30, and a potential opportunity goes after back-to-back double faults from Alcaraz.
Big fist pump from the Spaniard to his box, as the ace out wide swings away from Berrettini. Return into the net from the Italian and Alcaraz has his hold.
He’s quite good at tennis

SET ALCARAZ!
19:59 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 6-3 Berrettini
Alcaraz continues to return so, so well. Great depth, and Berrettini’s forehand reply is long. 15-30, Alcaraz a couple of points away from the set.
One point away! Two set points coming up, another superb return followed by a lob to match.
Massive serve down the T, Alcaraz not far away from dropping that right on the baseline. Deuce! Alcaraz turns to the drop shot again, it clips the top of the net and falls back onto his side of the court. Two chances come and go.
SHOT! Alcaraz thunders a forehand crosscourt, both feet off the ground and Berrettini just watches like the rest of us. Set point again.
TAKEN. Berrettini whips a forehand long and Alcaraz is a set away from victory.
Alcaraz one game away from the set
19:54 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 5-3* Berrettini
Haven’t been many of those in this set. Or the last. Forehand whipped halfway up the net from Alcaraz.
He makes up for it next point, with what looks to be a perfect drop volley. Hands up in apology though, that clearly wasn’t the intention!
Doubt that was the plan either, volley into the tramlines from Alcaraz. 15-30. Berrettini has to pounce.
Berrettini does not pounce. Inches away from making the backhand down the line, it’s out though and Alcaraz battles his way to a crucial hold.
Third set not done yet!
19:49 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 *4-3 Berrettini
Berrettini with a drop shot of his own, Alcaraz can only flick it up and the Italian is there to intercept that for a simple volley.
First serve down the T, Alcaraz unable to get it back and it’s a swift hold to love.
Alcaraz too good
19:47 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 4-2* Berrettini
Alcaraz shapes to unleash the forehand, and at the last moment just slides his racket under the ball to drop it over the net. Berrettini doesn’t have a prayer of getting near that.
No need for something clever this time, it is the forehand that is whipped into the open court and Alcaraz eases to another hold. He’s closing in on this third set.
Berrettini still in it
19:41 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 *3-2 Berrettini
Goes without saying that Berrettini has to hold here, to at least keep this third set tight. Hmm... slice into the net. Deuce and Alcaraz will feel he can pretty much wrap up the set here.
Chance to do so here, break point! Backhand pass drops right at the feet of Berrettini and he can’t lift it over the net.
Berrettini saves it, despite Alcaraz jumping to try and reach that smash. Not sure he would have got there had he been even three times taller.
Wonderful touch at the net from Berrettini this time, guides the volley into the empty court and he keeps himself in touch.
Alcaraz marches on
19:36 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-4 3-1* Berrettini
Sharp contrast in how these service games are going. Alcaraz firmly in charge.
Races to 40-0 up, looks to seal the hold to love with a very cute drop shot but it doesn’t quite clear the net. And that’s stunning from Berrettini! Slice down the line as Alcaraz moves to the net, clean winner.
From 40-0 to deuce. Alcaraz into the net, all gone a bit loose from him the last few points.
That’s not great from Berrettini either, poor return into the net. Launches his racket into the air, thankfully for his bank balance he catches it.
Alcaraz, after that brief scare, consolidates the break.
Alcaraz breaks!
19:30 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 *2-1 Berrettini
Here we go again. Alcaraz with a sixth break point, in what has turned into a pivotal game.
TAKES IT. Not an easy overhead at all, but he puts it away superbly and at long last he secures the break.
19:28 , Matt Verri
Berrettini looks for the backhand down the line, nets it. 0-30 and trouble for the Italian.
Make that big trouble. Forehand long, frustrated turn to his box but there’s nothing they can do about it. Three break points.
Alcaraz does superbly to even make a rally of the first one, charging around the court but Berrettini too good with the forehand. And the Italian saves the second too, big serving.
Deuce! Return from Alcaraz flies long, all three break points have come and gone. He’ll get a fourth opportunity, Berrettini with a tame backhand into the net. Long again from Alcaraz! He’ll be furious if he lets this game slip by.
Back to deuce for a third time though, Berrettini has the chance to get out of this game but the forehand is into the tramlines.
Break point number five! Lovely forehand from Alcaraz. And it’s saved once more! Berrettini’s forehand getting him both into and out of trouble. Deuce again.
Alcaraz levels it up
19:21 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 *1-1 Berrettini
Second double fault of the match from Alcaraz, plays the rest of the game well enough to ensure it’s not an issue though.
Berrettini continues to throw the kitchen sink and everything else he can find at the forehand, not always getting it right. Long of the baseline and Alcaraz is on the board in the third.
Berrettini with opening hold
19:17 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 *0-1 Berrettini
Tight... tighter! Berrettini twice testing the line judges, both time his shots just about land in though and he takes the point.
Follows it up with brilliant reactions, moving quickly as the net cord pops the ball up. Puts the volley away and he’s up and running in the third set.
SET ALCARAZ!
19:12 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 6-3 Berrettini
Clean hitting from Alcaraz, throws everything at that forehand and it lands just inside the baseline. 30-0, two points away.
He swiftly makes that three set points, the world number one has been superb in the last 25 minutes or so. Double fault - superb for most of the last 25 minutes.
And now the forehand flies long, 40-30 and just one set point remaining. Poor guy doesn’t realise how badly I’ve jinxed him.
There we go, gets the job done at the third time of asking! One set each.
Over to Alcaraz...
19:08 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 *5-3 Berrettini
So then, Berrettini serving to extend the set. Alcaraz wants it done here and now, dropping the ball at Berrettini’s feet and the Italian is unable to flick it back over the net.
The delicate lets him down, so a swift return to brute force. Ace makes it 40-15, before good work at the net seals the hold and keeps him in the set.
Alcaraz closes in on set
19:04 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 5-2* Berrettini
Drop volley is perfect from Alcaraz, spinning back towards the net. Berrettini does superbly to even get there, but it’s a simple put-away for Alcaraz.
40-0, Berrettini goes for broke with the return... long. Alcaraz a game away from levelling this match up.
Already feels like we’ve got a long match in store - good news is we’ve got plenty of time to play with before the 11pm curfew becomes even vaguely a concern.
Berrettini still in it
19:01 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 *4-2 Berrettini
Whatever Berrettini did at the changeover, it’s worked. He’s come out firing, the forehand punching through Alcaraz’s defence.
Seals a swift hold to love with an ace down the T - now to get to work on the Alcaraz serve.
Top seed consolidates break
18:57 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 4-1* Berrettini
This is ominous for Berrettini, Alcaraz is starting to go through the gears. Hasn’t missed a shot in about ten minutes.
The latest a whipped forehand winner crosscourt, 40-0 and this set is getting away from Berrettini. Rapidly. Poor forehand from Alcaraz briefly keeps Berrettini in the game, but big serve out wide doesn’t come back and the break is consolidated.
Alcaraz breaks!
18:54 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 *3-1 Berrettini
Berrettini at the net, lets the Alcaraz backhand go... and it’s in! World number one really doesn’t need any additional help.
He’s getting it though, loose forehand from Berrettini, followed by another unforced error. 0-40, three break points and Alcaraz has been gifted them.
The top seed needs just one! Berrettini nets the forehand, Alcaraz has his break and control of the set.
Alcaraz turning on the style
18:51 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 2-1* Berrettini
RIDICULOUS from Alcaraz! Almost in the crowd, basically in line with the net and he somehow finds room to flick the ball deep into the empty court. Best shot of the match, by a mile.
Just as important to him are the two first serves that then secure the hold, followed by the first hearty ‘vamos’ of the evening.
Berrettini saves break point
18:47 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 *1-1 Berrettini
Not his best. Wild forehand really from Berrettini, who is swiftly under real pressure at 0-30. Didn’t convert the break point last game, will he be immediately punished?
Maybe not, a couple of far more confident forehands, Alcaraz unable to get the direction right with the lob and Berrettini has pulled it back to 30-30.
Break point! Stunning point - looked to be over two or three times before the drop shot delivers this time for Alcaraz. 133mph first serve from Berrettini gets him out of trouble, deuce.
Two more timely first serves and the Italian levels the second set up.
Alcaraz survives scare
18:41 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 1-0* Berrettini
Berrettini down behind the baseline, he’s taken an awkward fall and not getting up quickly. Don’t need more injury problems on Centre today. Looks like he’s fine though, Alcaraz over to make sure.
He’s more than fine - moves superbly to the net to put the volley away in the very next point. Huge return from Berrettini, Alcaraz does incredibly well to get it back as he charges to the, but it sits up for the Berrettini forehand. 30-30. Too good! Backhand down the line from Berrettini, break point and he is flying on Centre Court.
That’s not bad either though. Alcaraz hits it way out of trouble, flat forehand winner and he gets it to deuce.
It’s back to deuce for a second, and a third time. Alcaraz unable to get out of this game, again the drop shot lets him down. There is the hold though, had to grind really hard for that.
SET BERRETTINI!
18:32 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-6 Berrettini
Another very ambitious drop shot attempt from Alcaraz, barely makes it to the net. His second-serve return then flies long, 30-0 and Berrettini two points away.
Big, big hitting from the Italian, but Alcaraz is up to the task and the forehand crosscourt is good enough. And again, whips it past Berrettini and he’s right back in the game at 30-30.
Maybe not. Serve down the T and Berrettini has a set point. Can’t take it, forehand into the net. Deuce.
135mph first serve brings up a second set point. TAKEN! Flat backhand and Berrettini is a set up on the world number one.
Berrettini breaks!
18:26 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-5* Berrettini
Drop volley from Alcaraz is good, but he’s a bit too casual next point. Drop shot doesn’t clear the net, 15-30.
And now two break points! Brilliant lob from Berrettini, Alcaraz gets there but the Italian is waiting to put away the smash.
First one saved. Wow. Alcaraz somehow gets a forehand back, lands a few inches inside the baseline and Berrettini hammers his forehand into the net. 30-40.
But Berrettini has the break now! Alcaraz’s forehand is wide... confirmed after a challenge. Berrettini will serve for the set.
Berrettini saves break point!
18:21 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz *3-4 Berrettini
Another loose slice from Berrettini, hasn’t got that shot going so far. Gives Alcaraz a bit of an opening at 30-30, especially with a second serve now to attack.
Here we go - break point! Poor forehand from Berrettini and Alcaraz has a chance to take control of this opening set. Saved, brilliant drop shot from the Italian and even Alcaraz can’t chase that down. Deuce.
Big grunt from Alcaraz, looks to go huge with that forehand but it’s wayward. Crucial hold.
Routine hold for Alcaraz
18:14 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 3-3* Berrettini
Berrettini not able to enjoy any sort of success on the Alcaraz serve yet, a lot of free points for the Spaniard.
40-0 down, he looks to go big on the second-serve return but he can only send the forehand halfway up the net. Alcaraz levels it up once more.
Berrettini edges ahead again
18:10 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz *2-3 Berrettini
Neither player at their best yet, another unforced error from Alcaraz racket when he looked to be in control of the point. And he swivels to his box in frustration again, can’t make the backhand pass as Berrettini charged up to the net.
Does this time though! On the run, perfect backhand down the line. 40-30. Make that deuce, Berrettini unable to get a big forehand from Alcaraz back in play.
Unable to get any closer to a break though, as two good serves from Berrettini get the job done.
Still on serve
18:05 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 2-2* Berrettini
Anything you can do...
130mph ace out wide from Alcaraz, he’s racing through this game. Return from Berrettini is long, 40-0 in about a minute.
Bit more of a rally in the final point, but Berrettini unable to clear the net with the slice as he looks to move up the court.
Berrettini comfortable
18:02 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz *1-2 Berrettini
Alcaraz sets off in pursuit of the drop shot, makes it about two yards before giving up. And drops his racket. Apart from that...
Much more routine hold for Berrettini there, sealed as the Alcaraz return flies long.
Alcaraz up and running
17:59 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 1-1* Berrettini
Fair to say there’s a few Italian fans inside Centre Court. A massive roar from that particular as Alcaraz nets a forehand - bit harsh.
Less noise as Alcaraz works Berrettini around the court and finished the point off with a much more confident forehand.
That one slightly long, though Alcaraz challenges. And it was in! Clips the outside of the line and there’s the hold.
Berrettini saves break points
17:54 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz *0-1 Berrettini
Alcaraz decides to guess with the Berrettini serve, only to watch it fly in the opposite direction and clip the line.
Italian not with the greatest of starts though, loose forehand and Alcaraz has two break points already. Berrettini saves one, the lob from the Spaniard JUST lands long.
And he saves the second break point too, Alcaraz misfiring with the forehand. That was a theme in his last match. Deuce.
It’s a battling hold, as Alcaraz nets the attempt at a backhand pass. Berrettini had to work really hard for that.
Berrettini to serve first
17:50 , Matt Verri
Here. We. Go.
Players are out!
17:45 , Matt Verri
Berrettini out onto Centre Court, Alcaraz following behind.
Roof is open, though the clouds are starting to look a bit grey above. Watch out.
Warm-ups underway, action will be up and running in the next few minutes. Plenty of hype around this match - it’s got a lot to live up to.
Might as well learn from the best...

Alcaraz vs Berrettini next!
17:35 , Matt Verri
So then, we’ve rattled through the Centre Court schedule today.
Rybakina through in 20 minutes earlier after that withdrawal, Djokovic sealing victory over Hurkacz and Jabeur then hammering Kvitova.
It means Alcaraz and Berrettini will step onto court shortly, well ahead of schedule.
Game, set and match!
17:29 , Matt Verri
Wow.
Jabeur needs just over an hour to beat Kvitova, 6-0 6-3 and she has breezed into the quarter-finals.
Next up - a repeat of last year’s final. Elena Rybakina.
Berrettini back to his best?
17:22 , Matt Verri
Plenty of injury problems for Berrettini heading into this tournament, his build-up consisting of a 6-1 6-2 defeat to fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in Stuttgart.
Berrettini got his revenge against Sonego in the first round here though, before picking up two brilliant straight-set wins over Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev.
He will come into this evening’s clash full of confidence, that much is for sure.
Another epic in store
17:14 , Matt Verri
It was a five set epic when these two met at the Australian Open last year, Alcaraz coming back from two sets down to level it up before Berrettini went on to win a decider.
More late drama this evening? Quite possibly!

Jabeur on the charge
17:08 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz and Berrettini might want to speed up those warm-ups.
Jabeur now a break up in the second set on Kvitova, she leads 6-0 3-1 on Centre Court and is racing to victory.
Serious performance from the Tunisian!
Potential Centre Court thriller
16:54 , Matt Verri
It was just a few days before Wimbledon that Matteo Berrettini’s team sat him down and said he needed to decide whether to play or not.
Since mid-April, he had played just once competitively and managed to win just three games, perpetually beset as he was by an abdominal problem.
Had it been any other tournament other than Wimbledon, the 2021 runner-up admits he might not have signed up, and it wasn’t until the morning of his match that he felt fit enough to play.
Berrettini hasn’t had it easy in the draw to date having already beaten Alex di Minaur and Alexander Zverev but in the fourth match on Centre Court tonight faces Carlos Alcaraz.
Jabeur in a rush!
16:46 , Matt Verri
We might now have too long to wait for Alcaraz and Berrettini.
They’re on following the conclusion of Ons Jabeur vs Petra Kvitova, and the Tunisian has taken the first set 6-0 in 22 minutes!
Superb set from the sixth seed, but it’s been wild from Kvitova. One winner, 13 unforced errors.
Standard Sport prediction
16:41 , Matt Verri
This could be special. Very special.
Alcaraz is never in a dull match, and Berrettini’s form suggests he can really push the Spaniard this evening. It could be another long match on Centre Court, with Alcaraz potentially edging a clash that goes the distance.
Alcaraz to win in five sets

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of Carlos Alcaraz vs Matteo Berrettini!
Some match in store. The world number one is looking increasingly comfortable on grass and many expect him to be in the final on Sunday, likely facing Novak Djokovic.
He has a huge test to overcome this evening though, against a man in Berrettini who has returned to form in style over the past week.
We’ll have all the latest build-up before full coverage of that match, which will come at some time around 6:30pm BST on Centre Court.
