Alba to return to Inter Miami for 2025. Freire is gone. Who else is staying? Going?

Inter Miami announced its season-ending roster moves on Monday. The most notable news is that left back Jordi Alba will return for at least another season after his contract option was exercised.

Alba, the former Barcelona star and one of the top players in Major League Soccer, made $1.5 million last season. Terms of his new deal were not available. He will play the 2025 season for new coach Javier Mascherano, who was his teammate at Barcelona, along with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez.

Players whose options were declined are Sergii Kryvtsov, Franco Negri, Matias Rojas, Cole Jensen, Lawson Sunderland, and Felipe Valencia; although, the club remains in negotiations with Rojas.

Another player who will not be back is Argentine defender Nicolas Freire, whose loan from Mexican club Pumas UNAM expired. Freire, 30, played 10 games (nine starts), tore his right ACL in May and missed the rest of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery.

“It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a place so much,” Freire wrote on his farewell post on Instagram. “There still exist good people in football, and I’ve met many of them here. I fulfilled my dream of playing with the best in history [Messi] and also got to share the year with great players and professionals. Thank you Inter Miami for treating me like a member of your family. I will always remember you.”
