Manchester United’s disastrous season hit another low this weekend with Brighton comfortably dispatching Ruben Amorim’s side at Old Trafford.

Goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter sandwiched a Bruno Fernandes penalty, giving Fabian Hurzeler a fine away win in Manchester.

The defeat leaves United in wretched run of form that has seen them win just one game in their last eight, discounting the shootout success in the FA Cup against Arsenal which came after a backs-to-the-wall 1-1 draw.

INEOS made the decision to cut ties with Erik ten Hag earlier in the campaign after a poor start left United in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

However, fortunes haven’t changed since the arrival of Ruben Amorim with United winning just three league games since the Portuguese coach was appointed.

As reported by The Mirror, Premier League legend Alan Shearer has provided a damning verdict of United’s recent form, claiming they have got worse under their new head coach.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer says United have failed to improve under the new regime and feels the players are simply not suited to Amorim’s system.

“They’re actually worse now than they were under Ten Hag, because of what this manager wants to do with this system. The way he wants to play, the players just can’t do it,” he said.

Amorim was, himself, scathing in his assessment of his sides recent form, claiming they ‘maybe the worst in the history of Manchester United’ with Shearer also left dumfounded by the up-and-down nature of United’s recent showings.

“It’s so unusual that you’ve got one of, if not, the biggest club in the world and the manager is coming out and saying ‘this is the worst side in their history’ because of where they are and some of their performances.

Last week and the week before, we were saying how well they performed at Arsenal and how well they performed at Liverpool. Yet, a week later, he is coming out and saying they are the worst in their history, it’s incredible,” said Shearer.

The former England striker added that given the off-the-field chaos taking place at Old Trafford Amorim is on a “free pass” until the end of season where he will be expected to make major changes to his first team squad.

However, United’s form must improve in the meantime, otherwise they will spend the rest of the campaign embroiled in an embarrassing fight to stay in the division.

United are next in action this coming Thursday, as Rangers travel to Old Trafford for Matchday 7 of the Europa League.
