Alabama extends contract of Nick Saban through 2028 season

Alabama has extended the contract of head coach Nick Saban through the 2028 football season.

The new deal was announced by the university on Monday. It adds three seasons to his agreement, making it an eight-year contract in all. The updated contract extends through Feb. 28, 2029 — when Saban will be 77 years old. Saban turns 70 years old on Oct. 31.

Saban, 69, has coached the Crimson Tide to six national championships during his tenure in Tuscaloosa. The 2021 season will be his 15th season with the program. Alabama won the College Football Playoff National Championship last year, completing a perfect 13-0 season by beating Ohio State 52-24.

Saban is set to make $8.425 million this coming season. According to the school, Saban’s salary will increase annually through the length of the contract, which also includes a $800,000 “contract completion benefit” payable at the end of the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 contract years.

"Terry and I are pleased and happy to sign another contract extension that will keep us in Tuscaloosa through the end of our career," Saban said. "Our family calls Tuscaloosa and the state of Alabama home, it's a place where our roots now run deep. This agreement gives us the chance to continue to impact the lives of the young men and their families who choose to play football and get an education at Alabama.”

In addition to his six national titles at Alabama, Saban also won a national title at LSU back in 2003. His seven national championships is the most in college football history. Saban also was the head coach at Michigan State and Toledo and had a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins.

Saban has a 170-23 overall record with seven SEC championships at Alabama.

"Coach Saban is the best college football coach in the nation, and one of the greatest coaches of all time in any sport, and we are extremely fortunate that he has agreed to another contract extension at Alabama," said Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne.
