Report: Akim Aliu, NHL meeting to discuss hockey's cultural issues

Akim Aliu brought past racist comments by now-former Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters into the public eye earlier this week and will reportedly meet with the NHL to discuss hockey’s cultural problems.

According to Gare Joyce of Sportsnet, the two parties will have the important conversation some time next week.

Because of Aliu speaking up about Peters’ past comments, the NHL led an investigation into the incident and found multiple teammates that corroborated the allegation. The head coach resigned from the Flames on Friday.

Per Joyce’s source, Aliu views Peters’ resignation as “just a window into the problems in hockey [with this being] about the recognition of one guy.”

The former NHLer reportedly also wants “fundamental change [that] will address the problems of racism and all forms of abuse in hockey.”
