Eredivisie strugglers Sparta Rotterdam are on the verge of signing a new midfielder. According to Voetbal International, Kristian Hlynsson has agreed to join the club on loan for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old will link up with former manager Maurice Steijn at Het Kasteel.

Kristian Hlynsson has featured just nine times across all competitions so far this season. The Iceland international joined the Ajax academy in 2020 but has struggled to solidify a place in the first team. FC Twente, NEC Nijmegen and Go Ahead Eagles all expressed their interest in signing Hlynsson this month, but Sparta have won the race. The loan deal does not include an option to buy at the end of the season.

Hlynsson will undergo medical tests on Tuesday and then immediately join Sparta Rotterdam’s training. The club are currently preparing for a crucial league clash against FC Groningen on Sunday. A win could move them out of the bottom three.
