Morton-Hamilton becomes third SPFL Saturday game called off

Greenock Morton against Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Championship has become the third Saturday fixture in the Scottish Professional Football League to be postponed because of a frozen pitch.

Airdrieonians at home to second-tier leaders Falkirk, a match scheduled to be shown live on BBC Scotland, was called off on Friday.

And two League 2 matches - The Spartans' visit to Elgin City and Peterhead's home game against Stranraer - were called off after Saturday morning pitch inspections.

But a later inspection gave the green light for the League 1 match between Stenhousemuir and Annan Athletic to kick-off as planned at 15:00 GMT.

On Friday, referee Iain Sneddon conducted a 17:30 pitch inspection before the scheduled 19:30 kick-off and deemed conditions to be unsafe at Albert Bartlett Stadium.

Sneddon told BBC Scotland: "From quite early on, it was very clear there was a lot of packed ice under the surface. Player safety was the key criteria I was looking at.

"Although the ball can roll, I was very worried about player safety because that ground is really hard. It's clear with the temperature and forecast that the ice isn't going anywhere."

Details of the rearranged fixtures have yet to be announced.

Livingston and Ayr United now have an opportunity to move closer to league-leaders Falkirk on Saturday, when they take on Queen's Park and Raith Rovers, respectively.

Second-placed Livingston are six points behind Falkirk, while Ayr are a point further back in third.

Airdrieonians are 10 points adrift of Dunfermline Athletic at the foot of the table, with the second-bottom side visiting Partick Thistle.
