“Agreed in principle” – Fabrizio Romano provides update as Chelsea find solution for forgotten €20m man
Chelsea have agreed to loan Deivid Washington to Brazilian club Santos for the remainder of the season according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues haven’t been as busy as expected, but with the January window now into the final few days, this is usually the stage where things start to pick up.
Chelsea are yet to sign anyone, although they have agreed a €15m deal with Strasbourg for Mamadou Sarr, with the teenager set to join in the summer.
Washington to join Santos on loan
Whilst Chelsea are looking to bring one or two players in, they are also facing a race against the clock to move a number of players on.
To date Renato Veiga is the only notable departure with the 21-year-old joining Juventus on loan for the remainder of the season.
However, it now appears Chelsea have found a solution for Washington with Romano reporting the young Brazilian will join Santos for the remainder of the season.
He took to X.com and said:
“Santos have agreed in principle with Chelsea on loan deal for Deivid Washington until June. Formal steps to follow but Deivid’s set to join Neymar Jr at Vila Belmiro.”
Chelsea signed Washington from Santos back in 2023 in a deal worth €20m, with the 19-year-old signing a seven year contract.
Quite what Chelsea’s plan for Washington was is unclear and the teenager has only made three first team appearances, totalling just 25 minutes, although a move to Strasbourg last summer did collapse.

Washington has done better for the club’s under-21 side where he’s scored 10 goals in 18 appearances, but the plan can’t have been to spend €20m on a player for the development side.
Chelsea will be hoping Washington does well at Santos in an attempt to attract more suitors and increase his price ahead of what’s likely to be an inevitable permanent departure in the summer, but it feels like the Blues have wasted over a year of his development.
