Adds and Drops: Sidney Crosby has a new running mate

We’re now a full month into the NHL season and the Senators’ top line is doing some surprising damage, Sidney Crosby has a new winger (again), and the Kings are fully lubed up and sliding their way down the waterslide to complete and utter fantasy irrelevance.

So, as per Monday tradition, here’s the players you should target on your league’s waiver wire (or via trade, if you’re feeling frisky) right now, and a few suggestions on guys — and one organization — you should pull the plug on to make room for your new friends.

Add ‘Em

Matt Duchene, C, Senators (44% owned)

Entering the season we knew someone had to put up some points for the lowly Senators and it’s turning out, to the surprise of maybe like three people, that one of the team’s key pending UFAs is slinging a decent dose of offensive production after a bit of a slow start.

Ottawa’s bottom nine up front is pretty damn horrendous, but the top line of Ryan Dzingel, Duchene and Mark Stone has been one of the better top units in the East over the past couple weeks. Expect Duchene to keep up his point-per-game pace as he chases that free agent paper *cash register sound* all season long.

Josh Anderson, RW, Blue Jackets (30% owned)

The Jackets winger has been on a goal-scoring tear through 12 games this season, cashing in seven times to lead Columbus in that department while chalking up a tasty plus-9 rating so far, which also leads the squad.

Anderson has three goals and an apple over his last four contests, puts a lot of rubber on net, and will have ample opportunity to keep pumping out those offensive stats on Columbus’s second forward line and No. 2 power-play unit.

Dominik Simon, RW, Penguins (9% owned)

Simon finds himself, again, alongside Sid the Kid on the Penguins’ top trio — meaning it’s once again Simon’s turn to milk those sweet, sweet Crosby-enhanced numbers that every winger who gets their chance alongside No. 87 tends to produce.

Simon is pretty steamy right now, posting six of his eight points this season in the last five contests.

Jason Spezza, C, Stars (12% owned)

This guy is looking rejuvenated and refreshed under new Dallas bench boss Jim Montgomery after looking pretty old and slow during last season’s 26-point (career worst, by far) campaign under Ken Hitchcock — the killer of creativity himself.

Spezza has always had the talent and offensive juice to put up big numbers, and with added ice-time both at 5v5 and regularly on the power play, he’s on pace to get right back up around the 50-point range. Plus he’s still so damn fun to watch that it’s worth picking this dude up just to be more invested in his silky hands on a nightly basis.

Sami Vatanen, D, Devils (24% owned)

The 27-year-old blueliner is piling up an absurd amount of time on ice this season — skating over two minutes a game more per night than his already-high career average of 21:03. With added ice-time should come added production, if my math is correct, especially considering Samy Vats is a fixture on the Devils’ top pair and gobbles up solid power-play time on the second unit, too.

With six points in 10 games so far, Vatanen is on pace for 45-50 if he can stay healthy for the majority of the campaign which would eclipse his career high in that department by a decent chunk.

Mikko Koskinen, G, Oilers (9% owned)

Koskinen was absolutely lights out during his second start of the season, stopping all 40 pucks he saw and posting a goose egg for his first NHL win in over seven years. He was rewarded for that performance by being granted his second straight start and put up his second consecutive win against the Red Wings on Saturday.

Nothing gets me more excited than completely overreacting to a 30-year-old goalie’s lights out performance over a minuscule sample size, so I’m going all in on Koskinen at this point — at least for a week.

As for who to drop to make room for some of the aforementioned adds, consider these options when giving your roster a haircut:

  • Justin Williams, RW, Hurricanes

  • Max Pacioretty, LW, Golden Knights

  • Henri Jokiharju, D, Blackhawks

  • Maxime Lajoie, D, Senators

  • James Reimer, G, Panthers

  • Anyone on the Los Angeles Kings roster

  • Gritty
