ACOA cash for Corner Brook's Special Olympics Canada Winter Games

The federal government has stepped in to provide $250,000 towards the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, as the clock ticks down to the opening ceremonies on March 1.

"We're really appreciative, because it helps with out planning," Len Moores, the games' organizing chair, told CBC News.

"We have 1,000 people to feed for a week, we have to transport them everywhere for a week, so the sponsorship will be going to those types of activities."

Organizers expect an additional 700 family, friends and fans to accompany the athletes, as they spend five days competing in seven different sports.

Volunteers have spent four years planning the event.

The money, from ACOA's business development program, was announced Friday morning in the city.

"We wanted to support as best we could," said Gudie Hutchings, member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, adding she has worked with Special Olympians in the past.

"Their enthusiasm — they are true ambassadors of what sportsmanship is."
