AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea FC LIVE! Champions League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today

AC Milan vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Reece James handed England a World Cup injury scare as Chelsea went top of Champions League Group E with a 2-0 win over 10-man AC Milan. James cut a dejected figure when trudging off midway through the second half with an apparent leg problem, adding to both Chelsea and England’s injury concerns.

Jorginho’s penalty and a fine Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finish sealed Chelsea’s fourth win in a row in all competitions under Graham Potter. Former Blues defender Fikayo Tomori endured a night to forget at the San Siro with an 18th-minute red card that put his old club in the driving seat and sent Milan on the way to another frustating night.

England arguably boast the most strength at right-back in world football, but manager Gareth Southgate’s options for Qatar are appearing more limited by the day. Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is rated only 50-50 to make the World Cup that starts on November 20 after groin surgery. Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has an ankle problem, and now James has added to those worries.

Aubameyang shines on San Siro return

22:49 , Matt Verri

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has three goals in his last three Chelsea games to announce his arrival as the club’s no9.

The 33-year-old scored once again against AC Milan, slotting cooly into Ciprian Tatarusanu’s near post after being played in behind by a cushioned Mason Mount pass in the 34th minute at the San Siro as the visitors cruised to a 2-0 win.

The goal was a beautiful moment for a player who tried and failed to make it at Milan as a teen striker at his first professional club - ultimately failing to break in with the legendary Ronaldo leading the line.

Indeed, he was in inspired form back in Italy, producing the most shots, creating the most chances and leading the way for touches in the opposition box for players from either side, before he came off to applause with ten minutes remaining.

Chelsea player ratings

22:21 , Matt Verri

Jorginho - 8

As usual, Jorginho perfectly dispatched his penalty and it was all the more impressive after such a long delay.

It was his 200th appearance for the club on Tuesday night in all competitions. He barely misplaced a pass, boasting 98% passing accuracy after completing more passes than any other player.

FT: AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea

And that will be that at the San Siro.

Easy as you like for Chelsea, after that red card to Tomori. James’ injury the only concern for them.

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Two more minutes of added time to go.

Both sides would have been happy for this match to finish half an hour ago.

Yellow card going to need a rest...

21:54 , Matt Verri

21:53 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Tonali the latest Milan player into the book. That’s five yellows and a red.

Oh, make that six yellow cards. Toure late on Azpilicueta and the referee cannot wait to get over there.

21:51 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Azpilicueta cuts the ball back to Gallagher, takes too long to get his shot away though and the chance goes.

Chilwell does not wait as long, trying his luck form 25 yards out. Dragged comfortably wide.

21:49 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Another very cheap free-kick, to put it mildly. Gallagher then gets himself booked for holding onto the ball too long after Havertz handballs, all a bit pointless.

It’s not boring when this referee is around!

Nizaar Kinsella at the San Siro

21:47 , Matt Verri

This game has ebbed away from Milan now with Chelsea fans shouting ‘ole’ as Graham Potter’s side hoard possession against the Italian giants.

21:46 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Havertz should do much better, as Kovacic floats a ball over the top.

If he brings it down, he’s in on goal. As it is, it’s a poor touch that rolls out for a goal-kick.

21:43 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Toure on for Hernandez for Milan, as Origi also comes on to replace Leao.

For Chelsea, Havertz will get ten minutes as Aubameyang is brought off. Think Havertz will be a fair bit happier about coming on than Origi is.

21:40 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Leao beats three players, can’t beat a fourth and then demands a free-kick.

Not given for once. He had about 40 yards between him and the nearest Milan player, not given much of a chance to make something happen.

21:38 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Here we go, Chalobah with an error and Leao with space to run at the Chelsea defence.

Rebic up with him - decides to ignore him and then gets tackled. San Siro less than impressed.

21:34 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Chalobah gets bored and tries his luck from distance. Shanked wide.

Milan have almost stopped moving now, in the nicest possible way. Training session does not do this justice.

21:32 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Pobega the latest Milan player into the book.

Away from that, Chelsea continue to knock the ball around. Hernandez then sees it out for what he thinks is a goal-kick... corner.

21:29 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Chelsea can do whatever they want with the rest of the match. Could keep the ball at the back for another 25 minutes and Milan would probably let them.

That early red card really painful for Milan - they’d made a great start before then.

21:25 , Matt Verri

62 mins: James trudges off, have to hope it’s nothing too serious.

Sterling also off, with Loftus-Cheek and Azpilicueta the two coming on for the final half hour or so.

21:23 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Dest really should get Milan back in it!

Leao skips past Gallagher and then James cross into the box comes all the way through to Dest. Lots of time, blazed high and wide from inside the box.

James is back down on the ground, he’s going to have to come off.

21:21 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Good to see, he’s back up and looks fine to continue. Wonder if Potter will take him off anyway, no need to take any risks.

Leao enjoying a few seconds with James off the bench, drives forward on the left and wins a corner for Milan.

21:20 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Another cheap free-kick, James and Hernandez challenging each other and Milan get the decision.

James falls to the ground, looks to have landed awkwardly and maybed jarred his knee. Getting treatment - concerning sight for both Chelsea and England.

21:18 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Another lovely Chelsea move, as James clips it out to the edge of the box.

Kovacic’s volley is directed at goal by Aubameyang, parried away by the goalkeeper and Milan just about clear their lines.

21:16 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Any sort of switch of play and Chelsea have acres of space.

Koulibaly can fly forward from defence, fizzes a past through to Aubameyang but just too much on it. Booted behind for a corner.

Chilwell takes, Silva goes up for it but can’t get any real contact on the header.

21:13 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Should be 3-0!

Chalobah plays Gallagher through, first touch takes him round the goalkeeper but from a tight angle he fires into the side-netting.

Had more time than he realised there.

21:12 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Much better from Milan, Dest slides the pass through to Tonali and he gets to the byline.

Kepa flicks it into the six-yard box, Giroud waiting to smash it home but Silva throws himself in the way brilliantly.

21:11 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Jorginho clips a ball over the top, Chilwell briefly looks to be in goal but he goes now.

Whistle goes... for offside. Briefly looked like Milan could be in yet more trouble, but no such concerns.

Back underway

21:08 , Matt Verri

Up and running again at the San Siro.

Change from Chelsea at the break - Gallagher replaces Mount.

Nizaar Kinsella at the San Siro

21:04 , Matt Verri

Chelsea’s second goal has knocked the stuffing out of the atmosphere at San Siro which had been fervent.

AC Milan had reacted well to the first goal and Fikayo Tomori’s red card but it is hard to see Chelsea throwing this away now.

Graham Potter’s side are top of Group E as it stands after Dinamo Zagreb equalised against RB Salzburg.

Aubameyang on target again!

21:02 , Matt Verri

Harsh on Tomori?

20:56 , Matt Verri

HT: AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea

20:53 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time, met with a chorus of jeers. Referee could do with a quick route off.

Chelsea with the perfect, two goals and a man up at the break, Milan needing an absolute miracle after Tomori’s red card.

20:51 , Matt Verri

45+4 mins: Gabbia slides in on James, doesn’t get the ball and brings him down. Already on a yellow card, but the referee has suddenly found a lenient setting. Lets him off with just a talking to.

That would have really capped off a miserable half for Milan.

20:49 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Milan not getting anywhere near the ball, Chelsea content to knock it around with ease. Eventually Kovacic looks to play Mount in behind, too much on it.

Not to worry though, Chelsea immediately back in possession. Milan with everyone deep behind the ball.

20:47 , Matt Verri

45 mins: James down though, caught a finger in the eye from Leao it looks like as he chased after the winger.

Five minutes of added-time signalled - could well be more while James receives treatment.

20:46 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Milan need half-time or this is going to get worse. Mount with another brilliant turn, left-footed strike from outside the box and it’s palmed behind for a corner.

Home fans not getting bored of booing, admirable commitment. Corner comes to nothing, Tonali hammers it up the pitch.

20:44 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Chelsea have taken complete control of possession again, looks really easy for them all of a sudden.

Sterling out to James, so much space on the right. Looks to dink a cross to the back post but too much on it - straight out of play.

20:41 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Hernandez with a decent delivery, Giroud has space again but the header is looped over the bar.

Milan are going to keep piling forward so this isn’t over yet - issue is there’s just as much chance of them going down to seven men the way it’s going.

20:40 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Leao crowded out, loses the ball and Chelsea have so much space on the counter.

Aubameyang drives forward, plays it to Chilwell on the overlap but he can’t quite get enough on the cross. This is not going to finish 2-0.

Back to Leao taking the entire defence on by himself, wins a corner this time.

20:38 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Krunic into the book for saying something to the referee, that’s the fifth yellow card to go with the red card. Still ten minutes until half-time!

Chaotic from Milan and it’s pretty similar from the referee.

GOAL! AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea | Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 34'

20:36 , Matt Verri

Chelsea double their lead!

That’s a really slick move and the visitors have complete control now. Mount slides the pass through, Sterling and Aubameyang make the same run but it’s the striker who gets there and finishes inside the near post.

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Referee might need a change of yellow cards at half-time, this one is filling up. Gabbia the latest in the book as he catches Mount in the face, lovely spin from the Chelsea midfielder.

Only Aubameyang in the box - Jorginho content to just play it back instead.

20:33 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Hernandez to put it into the box? No, he decides to go for goal. Just about keeps it in the stadium.

Chelsea looking to slow things down when they’re in possession, cool the temparature by a few degerees. Not easy though.

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Latest attempt to get Chelsea down to ten players sees Krunic roll around after a challenge from Sterling.

To be fair that wasn’t a clever tackle from the Englishman at all, painful one. Yellow card for Sterling.

This is a really good spell for Milan, visitors struggling to get out despite the man advantage.

20:29 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Massive chance for Milan, Giroud has to score!

Diaz curls a wonderful cross into the box, Giroud completely free in the middle but he’s somehow diverted the header wide. Won’t get a better chance than that.

Nizaar Kinsella at the San Siro

20:25 , Matt Verri

Fikayo Tomori’s red card was given because he was judged to have not attempted to play the ball after Mason Mount ran in behind.

It feels like a harsh red card but Chelsea won’t care!

20:25 , Matt Verri

23 mins: This is going to be a mess now. Kovacic goes shoulder-to-shoulder, Hernandez goes down and rolls around in ‘agony’. Milan will do everything they can to try and even this up.

Chelsea need to keep their cool now, no need to do anything silly.

GOAL! AC Milan 0-1 Chelsea | Jorginho 21’

20:22 , Matt Verri

Long, long delay as Milan complain about the decision.

Eventually Jorginho steps up to the spot and he makes no mistake! As composed as ever, rolled into the bottom corner.

Penalty Chelsea!

20:19 , Matt Verri

AND A RED CARD!

Mount is in behind, pokes an effort at goal but he’s being dragged down at the same time by Tomori.

Referee points to the spot and quickly brings out the red cad too.

20:17 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Leao senses the mood and just throws himself to the floor, looking hopefully at the referee. Even by tonight’s standards that isn’t a foul.

Chelsea win it back and Sterling looks to set Aubameyang in on goal, pass it underhit though.

20:15 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Kovacic wins the ball back high up the pitch, but the whistle goes. Bennacer really lucky to get that decision, Chelsea were in a great position.

And now another soft free-kick for the hosts. Chelsea getting increasingly frustrated.

Nizaar Kinsella at the San Siro

20:12 , Matt Verri

AC Milan have already shown their intent to try to ‘put right’ their performance at Stamford Bridge with a bright start in front of their own fans.

The intensity of the atmosphere seems to have transmitted to the pitch with several free-kicks won early on by the Italian giants.

20:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Deafening boos as Mount goes over to take this.

Taken short, eventually put into the box and Milan clear. They’re breaking really quickly up the pitch, Leao leading the charge as the hosts fly forward.

Sterling follows brilliantly though and slows Milan down, Chelsea get enough numbers back to deal with it.

20:10 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Milan pushing higher up the pitch, Hernandez a bit keen though as he catches Mount late. Not a great challenge at all.

Nice ball played over the top towards Aubameyang, he can’t quite get on the end of it though and it’s a Chelsea corner.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Koulibaly slides in as Hernandez drives at him, far too quick to go to ground though and it’s an easy decision for the referee.

Decent chance for Milan to whip something into the box. Tonali does just that, bobbles around a bit before Chelsea hook it away.

20:04 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Milan get an early free-kick as Tomori goes down off the ball, claiming he got caught in the face by Mount. Chelsea man looks a bit confused by that.

It’s been a quick start from the hosts, already a marked difference to last week.

KICK-OFF!

Pioli: High level required

19:43 , Matt Verri

AC Milan Stefano Pioli has warned his side they cannot afford to make as many errors tonight as they did last week at Stamford Bridge.

“If you make certain mistakes you have great opponents with great quality who take advantage of it,” Piolo said.

“The technical level and the choices, the compactness of the team and the management of certain situations must be of a high level.”

Tomori out for revenge

19:31 , Matt Verri

Fikayo Tomori has spoken of his anger at AC Milan‘s performance against Chelsea which was expressed through his goal celebration after netting against Juventus over the weekend.

The Rossoneri responded to a 3-0 defeat away at Stamford Bridge last week by winning a crucial clash in Serie A, establishing themselves as a major contender to retain their title.

Ahead of tonight’s clash, Tomori revealed his rage and desire to put things right after being blamed for his poor defending of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s goal.

“After the match against Chelsea I was angry and I wanted to give everything on the pitch and when I scored the goal that was my feeling,” Tomori said at Milan’s training ground.

The Curva Sud Ultras are going to be out in full force at San Siro.

Chelsea will have to hold strong in the early minutes with AC Milan determined to show that their 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge was just a blip.

Potter: I’m not getting carried away

19:20 , Matt Verri

Graham Potter has urged his Chelsea side not to get carried away with their recent winning run.

The Blues won all three matches last week, including the win on home soil over Milan, but the Chelsea boss has called for his side to now back it up.

“AC Milan will try to use the home advantage as we did last week,” Potter said in his pre-match press conference.

“It is two good teams, two evenly-matched teams. So it will be a fantastic game and I’m looking forward to it.

“As I used to say at Brighton, wins are the best way to convince people that your ideas can work and it is only a short time, so I’m not getting carried away.

“Wins help but it’s about getting to know the players and the process. But we all know – and you guys will remind me – that we need to win as well. So it was a good week, but it was only a week.”

More of the same?

Chelsea so, so dominant at Stamford Bridge in a week ago in their 3-0 win over Milan.

Visitors offered next to nothing in attack, and looked incredibly shaky at the back as the Blues ran riot.

Here’s how it happened...

AC Milan team news

18:58 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Tatarusanu, Gabbia, Kalulu, Tomori, Hernandez, Bennacer, Tonali, Krunic, Diaz, Leao, Giroud

Subs: Toure, Rebic, Dest, Origi, Messias, Pobega, Mirante, Coubis, Jungdal

Blues stars return

Pretty much as expected fom Chelsea at the San Siro.

Silva returns to the side after missing the win over Wolves as he recovered from a heavy cold. Aubameyang and Sterling return in the front three, while Jorginho partners Kovacic in midfield.

Kepa keeps his place in goal - he’s clearly Potter’s preferred option in goal.

Blues keen to tie Mount down

18:36 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have started formal contract negotiations with Mason Mount as they seek to tie down his long-term future with a lucrative new deal.

Standard Sport first revealed last month that Chelsea’s new owners were planning talks with Mount, who is in the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Discussions have now taken place and, while they are not at an advanced stage, there is optimism that an agreement will be reached with the 23-year-old England midfielder.

Mount is in line to become one of the highest earners at Chelsea and is ready to snub any advances from rivals in England and abroad due to his loyalty to the club. Negotiations could take time and, if a deal is not reached before the World Cup, they are likely to run into next year as Mount will be eager to focus on the tournament in Qatar.

Silva set for landmark appearance

18:23 , Matt Verri

Thiago Silva is now 38, but he remains one of the first names on the Chelsea team sheet. The age-defying Brazilian has been a leader in defence for Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and now Graham Potter.

Tonight, he is set to make his 100th Champions League appearance, as Chelsea bid to take a big step towards qualification for the knockout stage when they play AC Milan. Silva was outstanding against his former club in last week’s 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge, and he will continue to play a key role for Chelsea this season.

Summer signing Wesley Fofana has been ruled out for a “few weeks” after injuring his knee against Milan, and Kalidou Koulibaly is still adjusting to life at Chelsea. It means the role of Silva could be crucial to Potter, who wants to tie down the veteran centre-back to a new contract that will take him close to his 40th birthday.

Milan is ready!

Prediction

18:07 , Matt Verri

Chelsea produced their best performance of the season to beat Milan 3-0 last week and followed it up with an equally dominant display against, an albeit far weaker, Wolves.

Confidence is firmly on the up for the Blues but we can’t see them having it quite their own way at San Siro, and Milan responded to the defeat with a fine 2-0 victory over Juventus. It’s likely to be far tighter tonight.

Draw, 1-1.

Chelsea team news

17:58 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have no fresh injury concerns, with Hakim Ziyech (illness) and Wesley Fofana (knee) sidelined. N’Golo Kante has suffered a fresh setback in his comeback from a hamstring issue but Thiago Silva returns from a heavy cold.

Potter left Raheem Sterling, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ben Chilwell on the bench, with Reece James afforded a late cameo, for the 3-0 win over Wolves, so all should return to the starting lineup here. Edouard Mendy was fit enough to join them so could also return to action.

Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Kepa; Chalobah, Silva, Koulibaly; James, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Chilwell; Mount, Aubameyang, Sterling.

AC Milan team news

17:48 , Matt Verri

AC Milan have been boosted by the return of left-back Theo Hernandez, who should start the game, but that’s where the good news ends.

A hefty injury list means the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mike Maignan, Alessandro Florenzi, Simon Kjaer and Davide Calabria are still missing. Charles De Ketelaere is a new name on the list after missing training with a muscle complaint.

Olivier Giroud should again lead the line, supported by Chelsea target Rafael Leao.
