Two months into Ruben Amorin’s Manchester United tenure, it’s pretty clear which players rank high in his estimations and, in turn, those on the lower end.

Of course, the first name that’ll spring to mind for most fans is Marcus Rashford, who’s been exiled from all first-team action for almost seven weeks. In 11 successive games, he watched on either from home or the stands, with Amorim frequently stating it’s due to the forward’s lacklustre performances in training that he’s had no choice but to omit him.

Antony, as was the case with interim Ruud van Nistelrooy, played a heavily reduced role as soon as Amorim took charge, featuring nine times and only twice as a starter. He departed on loan to Real Betis this week without making a Premier League start in the entirety of 2024/2025.

Elsewhere, though, supporters quickly twigged that Casemiro was of little use to the boss.

The seasoned veteran was given the nod in Amorim’s first game against Ipswich Town on November 24, partnering Christian Eriksen in the middle of the park at Portman Road in Kobbie Mainoo’s absence. After the spoils were shared, Alan Shearer claimed it’d be ‘nigh on impossible’ for the ageing duo to properly fulfil the roles required of them in Amorim’s newly implemented system.

Casemiro, 32, has since featured only five more times – three times from the off – while being an unused substitute for 11 games. He has yet to play this calendar year.

He was offered an escape route, however. According to Times Sport, Roma made an approach at the beginning of the window to try and hash out a deal for the five-time Champions League winner but were ‘turned down’ by the player due to wage concerns; he is currently United’s highest earner on a ludicrous £350,000 per week and was well aware the Serie A outfit wouldn’t be able to match such a sum.

Instead, he had his sights set on a move to Saudi Arabia, where clubs would even be able to increase his wages if he agreed to draw the curtains on his illustrious European career. As of yet, and with only five days remaining of the window, no suitors are lining up.
