5 Bill Belichick college football landing spots, including Ohio State
The Thursday bombshell report about NFL coaching great Bill Belichick interviewing for the North Carolina job has officially put the college football world on notice.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer confirmed that Belichick has been talking with North Carolina and "has a genuine interest in the college game."
Once you pick your jaw up off the floor, it's worth imagining what other college programs might be interested in bringing in Belichick for a coaching job.
Including the Tar Heels, we've outlined five college football teams that might make sense for Belichick. One of them might make you scoff, but remember, this is Bill Belichick we're talking about.
You really never know what a truly big fish like Belichick might inspire an athletic department to do.
Ohio State
Belichick going to Columbus to take over the Buckeyes sounds like fan fiction until you think about the high stakes of the job and Belichick's extensive experience in handling such expectations. We're not sure how he'd do with the transfer portal or recruiting in general, but the school is starved for wins against Michigan and hiring Belichick might be the aggressive move to bring those back.
North Carolina
The Tar Heels make sense as a landing spot for Belichick where he'd probably be able to do whatever he wants. He'd arrive with a blue carpet and probably be given power most college coaches would salivate over having. It's a strange idea, but it's likely low-stress and comfortable.
Kentucky
If the Wildcats fire Mark Stoops after an underwhelming season in Lexington, we wonder if they'd scramble to call Belichick about an interview. The SEC has its perils, and Kentucky isn't going to win the recruiting battle every season. However, if Belichick wants to compete at the highest level and Alabama isn't a possibility, getting an SEC job like Kentucky would be a great way to do that.
UCF
Florida has nice weather, and UCF has a vacancy. That's the only reason we think Belichick would want to move to take a job in Orlando, but do not discount the appeal for a 72-year-old man living near beautiful golf courses in Florida weather. It makes you wonder!
Alabama
We're putting Alabama here because all it would probably take is a phone call from Belichick to his buddy Nick Saban to get the wheels going here. Would the Crimson Tide actually pay an outrageous Kalen DeBoer buyout to bring in a marquee name like Saban?
*Eric Roberts The Dark Knight voice* Have you met these guys?
Alabama hiring Belichick would be one of the most shocking college football stories of the decade, but if any program would go for a splash like this, it's one that misses a coach of his caliber.
We do not necessarily think this happens, but c'mon, we need to at least mention it.
