In a surprising turn of events over the last 24 hours, Paul Pogba has been linked with yet another return to Manchester United.

Nope, it’s not 2016 again. The maligned ex-Red is closing in on his long-awaited return to action after serving a reduced suspension for doping – and Old Trafford has been mooted as a surprise destination.

After bidding farewell to United upon the culmination of his contract in 2022, Pogba re-joined Juventus in hopes of reviving his stagnant form in a league where he had only excelled. Initially plagued by injuries, as is ever the case with the Frenchman, he proceeded to find himself in hot water when elevated levels of DHEA – a banned substance that raises testosterone levels – were found in his system following the opening match of the campaign.

He was subsequently banned from all club and national activities for four years until he successfully appealed the lengthy suspension; experts supported his claims that he had ingested the substance unintentionally, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) confirming a reduction from four years to 18 months.

Why United are being re-linked with ex-protegee Pogba

The 31-year-old reached a mutual agreement with Juventus to terminate his contract prematurely, therefore allowing him to choose his next destination – when he’s free to do so in March – at an all-new club for the first time in his senior career.

As such, when he shared a snap on Instagram last night showing a cartoon of himself alongside in-form United starlet Amad Diallo, it sparked widespread speculation over his intentions. Pogba then followed up the story with a picture captioned: “Let’s see what’s coming…”

His mysterious social media activity has, of course, had significant implications on the bookies, with WhoScored today confirming (citing Oddschecker) that the odds for the World Cup winner to re-join United have dropped substantially from 40/1 to 10/1.
