4 Surprise Oilers Stats From 'Wild' Victory

EDMONTON -- Every game tells a story.

The main story from last night's Edmonton Oilers game was that they won a bizarre game against the Minnesota Wild. They fell behind early but came out of the first 20 minutes with a tie game.

After that, they put their gas on the pedal and squeezed out a 5-3 win on the road.

Here are the most interesting stats from last night's game.

1044 Career Points

Connor McDavid etched his name in the Oilers' history books. He collected his 1044th career point, passing Jari Kurri to become the second-highest scoring Oiler ever.

The captain notched three points last night, bringing his season total to 62 points. He's also second in scoring for the Oilers this year. Leon Draisaitl leads the way with 65 points.

17:25 Time On Ice

Josh Brown has been a polarizing figure. On the one hand, he hasn't had great results on previous teams. On the other hand, he's a right-handed defender who is in the league for a reason.

Last night, he played a season-high 17:25. Before that, his previous high this year was 13:41.

Brown playing this much while paired with Darnell Nurse is a huge deal for the Oilers. If his play continues, he could outperform Troy Stecher and become a regular in the lineup.

2 Goals In 3 Games

Vasily Podkolzin has been a great addition to the Oilers. Stan Bowman moved a fourth-round pick for the Russian forward, but it could be the Oilers best trade before the end of the season.

Podkolzin didn't score a goal for all of December. However, last night, he scored his third goal this month. It was also his second goal in three games. Which is a very good sign for the team.

2.664 Expected Goals Against

Calvin Pickard stood on his head for the Oilers last night. Despite his stellar play and timely saves, some stats aren't praising his performance.

Three goals passed him despite the Wild having 2.664 expected goals (according to Moneypuck), giving Pickard -0.34 goals saved above expected. He has -4.2 goals saved above expected on the season.

Stats aren't everything, but they often paint an interesting picture.
