3 Big Predictions for the Lightning This Season

The Tampa Bay Lightning face many uncertainties heading into the new season. The off-season was filled with roster moves, and personnel shakeups always raise questions. With that being said, here are some predictions for the Bolts during the 2024-25 season.

Andrei Vasilevskiy Is a Vezina Trophy Candidate

The Lightning fell short again last year of attaining the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup. The one positive that the Lightning faithful could hold onto from their brief five-game series against the Florida Panthers was the play of Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Big Cat stood tall and proved he could still be an elite goaltender even when the Lightning's defense faltered.

For many fans, it marked the first time in a few seasons that Vasilevskiy looked like his elite self during the playoff showdown with the Panthers. Expect Vasilevskiy to carry over that level of performance into the new season, as the Lightning will rely on his play now more than ever.

Nikita Kucherov Tallies 120 Points for the Third Time

Nikita Kucherov accomplished every individual accolade last season except for taking home the Hart Memorial Trophy. It marked the second time in which the star forward eclipsed the 120-point mark. Now that the Lightning have lost their longtime top goal scorer in Steven Stamkos to free agency, they might have to lean on Kucherov more than in previous seasons. Tampa Bay attempted to fill in the gap left by immediately signing star winger Jake Guentzel.

The Lightning will also have returning weapons in Brayden Point and Brandon Hagel to carry the burden. In summation, there will not be any shortage of options at Kucherov's disposal this upcoming season. Thus, expect another memorable season from Kucherov.

Brandon Hagel Scores 40 Goals for the First Time

The Lightning's trade for Brandon Hagel during the 2021-22 season may very well go down as one of the best trades in franchise history. During his three years in Tampa, Hagel has exceeded all expectations that were put forth when he was first acquired. In 185 games with the Lightning, Hagel has scored 60 goals, along with chipping in 146 points. During his time in blue, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native solidified himself as one of their primer offensive staples.

Hagel had some previous part-time duties on the first line last season, and we should expect to see more this year as the Lightning will have more flexibility in their top six. Playing alongside Point and Kucherov will open the door to more opportunities for Hagel to reach the 40-goal milestone that many NHL players aspire to.
