2024 Paris Olympics: Simone Biles, Suni Lee star as Team USA takes gold in women's team gymnastics

Today's gold makes Simone Biles the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history — with individual events still to come.

Simone Biles is the only returning gold medalist on this team, but in case you thought that earning her first gold since Rio wasn't a big deal to Biles...think again.

Team USA is at the top of the podium once again, returning there after gold medals in 2012 and 2016.

The final table. China, Canada and Great Britain, who were in the running for bronze, fall short, which China's performance the most unexpected. Brazil fights past the field to take bronze as Italy holds the second spot, but the United States' dominant lead was untouchable in the end.

The United States wins gold, and look at what it means for Team USA.

Simone Biles got the assignment, and she delivers. Even with a few steps out of bounds, she smashes the routine and gets a massive score of 14.666.

For reference, only one other person — Brazilian Rebeca Andrade — broke 14 on floor in the team competition.

And here we go — Simone Biles takes the floor. Team USA only needs 10 points to pass Italy for gold, which is well within Biles's wheelhouse.

Jordan Chiles is up, and she really looks in her element on the floor. Chiles gets big air and completes an outstanding routine; she, and her parents in the stands, are emotional after the performance. She earns a big score of 13.966.

Suni Lee kicks off the U.S. on floor, getting in some huge tumbling passes and getting the U.S. off to a solid start with a score of 13.533.

Even with Chiles's struggle on beam, Team USA is in great position heading into floor, with a score of 129.131 after three rotations. Italy is just over three points behind in second place, and Great Britain has snuck into third, just a point back of Italy.

Rebeca Andrade, the Brazilian who is currently second in the individual all-around race, looks stunning on floor. She is easily compared to Biles in terms of her aerials and artistry, and she's been putting up big numbers today.

Biles is on beam, one of her best events. The reigning Tokyo bronze medalist on the event has a brief scare with only her toes keeping her on the beam, but she nails the dismount and earns herself a great score of 14.366 to close out the rotation.

Suni Lee gets in a great beam routine, and the energy is back for the United States. Her aerial passes look strong and she gets a solid dismount — and she look especially pleased with her performance afterwards. Lee's 14.600 gives the U.S. another boost with Biles still to go on beam.

Jordan Chiles starting off again in Team USA's third rotation. She falls while mounting the beam, but goes on to a solid finish and a stick on the landing. It's a blow to the U.S., as the score of 12.733 must be counted in the total, but there is room to bounce back and hold the lead.

Team USA continue to dominate with a score of 87.432 after two rotations. Italy and China take the next two spots, with second-place Italy more than three full points behind the U.S.

Suni Lee stays strong on her best event, sticking the landing. There's a small mistake in the middle — her feet brush the ground — but her high difficulty lifts the routine and she earns a 14.566, still the best score of Team USA.

Technically speaking, Simone Biles's worst event is uneven bars, but that's not saying much: She does a great job her routine, complete with a stellar landing. She gets a 14.400 to keep the U.S. at the top, with Suni Lee still to compete.

Lots of celebrities in the house for the women's gymnastics final, with Natalie Portman, Serena Williams and Spike Lee all among those cheering on Team USA.

Suni Lee falls from the uneven bars during warmups, but gets right back up. Laurie Hernandez, who won gold with Team USA at the Rio Olympics, is on the mic for NBC today and assures us not to worry — "It's just warmups," she says.

Biles opted to not do her Yurchenko double pike, her signature skill with a difficulty of 6.4, on vault today. But choosing to not do the skill, known as the Biles II, does not seem like it will affect the United States' medal chances today.

Team USA is at the top of the standings after one rotation with a score of 44.100. China and Italy trail behind with scores of 42.666 and 41.665, respectively.

Flavia Saraiva of Brazil, who fell on bars during warmups, is moving ahead despite a cut in her face after her knee made contact in the fall. She performed a solid routine on bars with a bandage on her right eyebrow, and looks healthy enough to keep competing.

Biles' husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, is in Paris supporting his wife with an excellent Biles-centric shirt. Owens got special permission from the Chicago Bears to miss practice so he can support Biles.

Simone Biles completes her vault with ease, showcasing her skill in the air. A massive 14.900 for Biles on the event that she pulled out of in Tokyo. An incredible start for Team USA.

Jade Carey, competing in her only event today, nails her vault, hopping a bit on the landing but otherwise looking great. She scores a 14.800, with a 9.200 execution. Great work from Carey to give the U.S. an early cushion on points.

Brazil's Flavia Saraiva had a hard fall on the uneven bars during warmups, and was down for a while. She's up now and being tended to on the side, but it's unclear if it will affect her ability to compete. Something to keep an eye on — Brazil is one of the United States' main competition today.

There are eight teams in total in today's competition: USA, Italy, China, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Great Britain and Romania. Team USA will be rotating with Italy.

Each team selects three gymnasts for each event, and every score will be counted towards the team score. As a result, teams are likely to pick consistent performers on those events, and will finish with their ace.

For Team USA, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles will compete in all four events, demonstrating their consistency. Biles will anchor three of four events — vault, beam and floor, all three of which she is dominant in — and Suni Lee will anchor bars, her specialty.

Jade Carey, the reigning gold medalist in the floor exercise, struggled in qualifications and later revealed that she had been ill for a few days before the prelim round. Carey will compete on the vault today in the team event, but will leave the rest of the rotations to her teammates.
