2024 NHL Draft Picks Are Lighting Up OHL Scoresheets In Recent Weeks; Calgary & Winnipeg Scouts Should Be Praised

Is the 2024 NHL Draft shaping up to be a strong draft class? Listen, we're only halfway through the season after the draft and a lot of these players have a long way to go in their development before they even sniff an NHL game.

However, some of these prospects who were picked at The Sphere last June are providing their NHL teams with strong early returns on their investment.

Below we look at five 2024 NHL draft picks who have been lighting up the OHL in recent weeks.

RW, Beckett Sennecke - Oshawa Generals
2024 Anaheim Ducks 1st round, 3rd overall

It seems like we are constantly talking about Beckett Sennecke, but it's not our fault he's constantly giving us reasons to showcase his brilliance. After initially not being invited to Canada's World Juniors selection camp, which was a shock to a lot of people, he earned an invite after putting up six goals and 14 points in just four games.

Sorry Sam Dickinson, but we have to showcase this outrageous goal he scored again.

Sennecke scored and added a helper in his return to Oshawa's lineup in their 3-2 win over the Brampton Steelheads on Sunday. Bringing his points total over the past five games to a whopping seven goals and 16 points. I think Anaheim made the right call drafting him third overall.

LW, Kieron Walton - Sudbury Wolves
2024 Winnipeg Jets 6th round, 187th overall

I remember watching Sudbury Wolves forward Kieron Walton at the 2022 OHL Cup tournament and thinking how ridiculous it was to see a player of his size skate so fluidly. He's taken time adjusting to the OHL, but his breakout season is upon us, and it comes after the Winnipeg Jets took a flyer on him in the sixth round this past June.

The Wolves lost a lot of their offensive firepower from last year. The OHL's leader in points, David Goyette, graduated to the professional ranks, along with Dalibor Dvorsky, and Quentin Musty held out to start the season as he requested for a trade and has only played 11 games this season (now injured).

Walton's offensive outburst this season has made up for some of that lost production. His 51 points lead his Sudbury team and is 19 more than Alex Pharand, who sits second on the team in points.

The Winnipeg Jets prospect is currently on a 12-game point streak recording an incredible 30 points in that frame. Over the past two weeks, he's put up 10 assists and 12 points in five games.

C, Luke Misa - Brampton Steelheads
2024 Calgary Flames 5th round, 150th overall

The Brampton Steelheads have been without their two top goal scorers and producers — Porter Martone and Carson Rehkopf — and will be for the next 2-3 weeks as they represent Canada at the 2025 World Junior Championship.

Calgary Flames prospect Luke Misa has stepped up in a big way in their absence and will need to continue to do so.

Over the last two weeks, he has recorded six goals and 13 points in six games. Misa isn't doing what his brother Michael is doing in Saginaw, but having 45 points in 30 games is impressive for the 2024 fifth-rounder.

LW, Kevin He - Niagara IceDogs
2024 Winnipeg Jets 4th round, 109th overall

The Winnipeg Jets have another prospect from the OHL heating up over his last four games. The Niagara IceDogs have won their last five games and have scored a total of 30 goals in those victories. Their offensive outburst has a lot to do because of the tenacious play out of the Jets 2024 fourth-rounder, Kevin He.

He had a tremendous start to the season. He started with a seven-game point streak, which saw him register nine goals and 18 points during that span. Over the last four games, Kevin has recorded 10 points and has been looking more and more dangerous game-to-game recently.

Henry Mews

RHD, Henry Mews - Ottawa 67's
2024 Calgary Flames 3rd round, 74th overall

The OHL scouts for the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets appear to know what they were doing at the 2024 draft. Here we have another Flames prospect starting to catch fire, and it's the offensive dynamo defenseman, Henry Mews.

The Flames' 2024 third-rounder is up to 41 points (third-most among OHL defensemen) in 30 games and on pace to eclipse his career-high of 61 points, which he set last year.

Mews was drafted seventh overall in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. He switched from playing forward to defense in his OHL draft year and has displayed his ability to lead the attack from the backend throughout his OHL career. Fellow OHL Site Editor Rowan McCarthy wrote about how he could be a potential steal of the draft.

The defenseman for the Ottawa 67's has recorded 12 points in his last six games over the past two weeks. With this impressive performance, he may be sending an early message to Hockey Canada, indicating that he should be considered for next year's World Juniors roster.
