2024 MLB mock draft roundup: Final projections ahead of first round

For the fourth year in a row, the MLB draft will take place during the league's All-Star Week.

All-Star Week kicked off with two days of events on Friday and Saturday, and it continues with opening night of the 2024 MLB draft on Sunday. The first 74 picks will be announced during the first night, including the first two rounds of the draft, compensatory rounds, Competitive Balance rounds and two prospect promotion incentive picks.

On the day of the draft, there still is not a consensus No. 1 overall pick. The latest projections have slimmed down the options to two possibilities: West Virginia shortstop JJ Wetherholt and Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana.

Cleveland Guardians, No. 1 overall

Keith Law – The Athletic: Travis Bazzana, 2B, Oregon State

Law writes: "As of Friday evening, the Guardians still hadn’t made a decision on this pick, and the teams behind them don’t expect to hear until pretty close to cuttin’ time. As far as I can tell, it’s Bazzana, Charlie Condon, JJ Wetherholt (who, in theory, would take a steeper discount), and perhaps one other name — I think Jac Caglianone, but I’m less certain of that."

Jonathan Mayo, Jim Callis – MLB Pipeline: JJ Wetherholt, SS, West Virginia

Callis writes: "The Guardians' strategy appears to be maximizing the value of their entire Draft class, and Wetherholt is the top talent who would accept the largest signing bonus discount."

Kiley McDaniel, ESPN: JJ Wetherholt, SS, West Virginia

McDaniel writes: "I'm pretty sure Cleveland is still considering five players, and I think I know who all five are. My current handicap here is Wetherholt at a 45% chance, Travis Bazzana a 40% chance, Jac Caglianone a 10% chance, Charlie Condon 4% and Chase Burns at 1%."

Cincinnati Reds, No. 2 overall

The Athletic: Charlie Condon, OF/3B, Georgia

Law writes: "I believe the Reds would take Condon if he’s there. If not, it would be Bazzana, Caglianone or Chase Burns."

MLB Pipeline: Charlie Condon, OF/3B, Georgia

Callis writes: "The Reds may prefer Condon, but if he prices himself beyond where they feel comfortable, they could turn to Caglianone or Burns."

ESPN: Jac Caglianone, 1B, Florida

McDaniel writes: "The buzz here most of the spring was that Condon would be the pick here if he doesn't go No. 1, but now the tide is turning a bit and Caglianone or Burns seem to be the leading options, with price a minor factor. I think the hitter wins the toss-up if the bonus prices are similar."

Colorado Rockies, No. 3 overall

The Athletic: Chase Burns, RHP, Wake Forest

Law writes: "Here’s where it gets a little more interesting, as the Rockies were presumed to be heaviest on Caglianone, but that seems to have cooled in the last week (not their interest, but the presumption). I assume they’d just take Bazzana if he got here."

MLB Pipeline: Chase Burns, RHP, Wake Forest

Mayo writes: "I still feel like this is a toss-up between a college bat (Caglianone) and a college arm in Burns, but we’ll make it two college pitchers in a row for the Rockies after they took Chase Dollander in 2023."

ESPN: Charlie Condon, OF/3B, Georgia

McDaniel writes: "I think part of the reason Condon seems like less of an option at the second pick is that Colorado's slot here is $9.07 million. The Rockies can easily push that to $9.21 million and give the top player on my board the record-breaking bonus that I think his camp is trying to land."
