Yahoo Sports 2021 MLS All-Star Game will be first to feature league's best against Liga MX
LOS ANGELES — The Major League Soccer All-Star Game is heading to Los Angeles, and it's bringing the best of Liga MX with it.
MLS commissioner Don Garber and Liga MX president Mikel Arriola held a press conference Wednesday to announce the joint event between the top leagues in the United States and Canada and Mexico. The game will be played August 25 at Banc of California Stadium, featuring MLS All-Stars against the best of Liga MX.
Due to the pandemic, the original event that was supposed to be held on June 29, 2020 had to be canceled.
“We came to Los Angeles with this concept because this is a city that has soccer or futbol at its core,” Garber said.
LAFC’s Bob Bradley will coach the MLS All-Star squad. From 2005-2019, the event pitted the best MLS players against a big-name club from Europe, such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid. This is the first iteration of a new format that's been in talks for years.
"The 2021 All-Star Game is another step in the partnership we have established between two of the best leagues in the world, and it will only intensify the rivalry between MLS and Liga MX," Arriola said.
Along with the game, there will be charitable events and a skills showcase as part of the all-star game.
“A game of this magnitude in Los Angeles, played in front of incredible fans in one of the greatest soccer stadiums in global soccer, is unlike anything our sport has seen,” Garber said. “This event is a perfect expression of the groundbreaking partnership that continues to build between MLS and Liga MX.”
