2 Vanderbilt players shot in attempt to retrieve teammate's stolen cellphone (Update)

Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason announced Wednesday that all three players have been suspended “from all football activities” indefinitely.

Two Vanderbilt players were shot Monday following an alleged incident involving a stolen cellphone.
According to The Tennessean, police say two Commodores, O’montae Daley and Frank Coppet, were shot outside a Target in Nashville on Monday night after their teammate, Donaven Tennyson, allegedly had his cellphone stolen.
After Tennyson saw the stolen cellphone listed for sale online, he set up a meeting with the seller and brought Daley and Coppet with him when trying to retrieve the phone.

Police said the players brought a pellet gun to an arranged meeting with the alleged assailants. When the pellet gun was shown by a player, one of the men pulled out a real pistol while the other man had a shotgun. Daley and Coppet were shot; neither suffered critical wounds.
According to a preliminary investigation, 19-year-old wide receiver Donaven Tennyson had offered his cellphone for sale on an internet site and met with a prospective buyer in the parking lot of Chili’s restaurant on West End Avenue at 5 p.m. Monday. Tennyson, a sophomore, told police his phone was stolen during the meeting.
Tennyson then went to the parking lot with friends and fellow teammates O’montae (Tae) Daley and Frank Coppet, both 18, in Daley’s red Toyota Corolla. According to police, they brought a pellet pistol with them, as one put it, “to help get the phone back.”
The group pulled up next to the seller’s gray Buick sedan and Coppet got out with the pellet pistol in his hand. A man in the Buick then got out and shot at them with a real pistol, while police say another man in the Buick fired a shotgun. Daley suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. Coppet received non-critical birdshot wounds to his arms. After the shots, the gunmen fled, one in the Buick, and one in Daley’s Toyota Corolla.
The suspects have yet to be identified.

Tennyson played in eight games in 2016 as a true freshman, finishing the year with 28 rushing yards on four attempts. Coppet, a defensive back, redshirted in 2016 while Daley signed with Vanderbilt in its 2017 recruiting class. Daley, a defensive back, was a three-star recruit who enrolled in January and participated in spring practice.
