15-Year-Old Youngest to Finish Top-25 at PGA Tour in 41 Years: ‘An Awesome Week’

“When I play well, I think I can compete with some of the better pros," high schooler Miles Russell says

This time of the year, most 15-year-olds are indulging in the fun of spring break, but for one of golf’s youngest stars it’s spent playing in the PGA Tour — and breaking a record held for decades.

Miles Russell is balancing his time these days between being a typical teenager and also playing amongst the best professional golfers in the sport, where he is making history with his impressive skills just months away from his 16th birthday.

On Friday, Russell became the youngest player to make the Korn Ferry Tour — the PGA Tour’s developmental tour for underage players — breaking a record that was last set in 2006 by Gipper Finau.

That achievement however, was just the beginning. Saturday, during Russell’s third round at Lakewood National Golf Club’s Commander Course, he had a one-under 70 before finishing the final round with a five-under 66.

That impressive performance led him to tie for a 20th place finish at 14-under and made him the youngest player since 1983 to place in the Top-25 on the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour.

Russell, native of Jacksonville Beach, expressed his excitement following the tournament and his ranking. “It was an awesome week. I had a blast,” he recently told the PGA Tour.

“Especially for my first one, you may get a couple weird looks like: ‘Who’s the little kid on the range?’ But, you know, everybody was so nice and so helpful with everything,” Russell added.

The top-ranked boys prospect at the American Junior Golf Association, Russell says this weekend’s performance boosted his confidence  to play with the professionals.

“When I play well, I think I can compete with some of the better pros, but this week I played well and I think it kind of showed it a little bit. But a good play is always good.”
