10 things from Raptors-Pacers (Las Vegas Summer League)

Here are 10 takeaways from the Toronto Raptors’ 94-79 win over the Indiana Pacers in Las Vegas Summer League.

One — The Raptors played their most complete game of Summer League and won the second half 48-31 to improve to 2-2. Not that the results matter, but it’s a reflection of the coaching by Jon Goodwillie and his assistants that the Raptors are steadily improving with each game played. The Raptors are actually executing plays consistently as a team and showing different defensive looks, which is hard to pull off with a bunch of strangers in this setting.

Two — Terence Davis stole the show in his first appearance as a Raptor. Davis signed a two-year deal after going undrafted this season, and he’s bidding to be this year’s version of Fred VanVleet. The 22-year-old showed a bit of everything, stuffing the boxscore with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Davis is a 6-foot-4 guard that plays both ends of the floor, and should challenge for third-string minutes at point guard.

Three — Davis wasn’t able to show off his hops but he did establish himself as a confident shooter. He took nine three-point attempts and converted four, including a difficult pull-up jumper to beat the shot clock. Davis was up-and-down from deep in his first three seasons at Ole Miss, but he took a step forward as a senior when he hit 37 percent on over five attempts per game. If he can knock down his open shots and a fair share of off-the-dribble looks, there’s a good chance for Davis to make it as a pro.

Four — The other aspects of Davis’s game were also on display. He recorded a handful of impressive assists including an alley-oop feed, a pair of pick-and-roll dimes, and a bullet pass to a big that had briefly sealed his defender down low. Davis was also active in the passing lanes and showed good compete for loose balls on both ends. Davis is definitely a point of interest going forward in the remainder of Summer League.

Five — Dewan Hernandez followed his impressive showing against the Knicks with an even better performance tonight. Hernandez finally cracked 50 percent from the field, which is a testament to the reads that he was making. He showed good chemistry operating off Davis, as the two paired for a couple of layups in the pick-and-roll. Hernandez finished with 18 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes.

Six — It’s always hard to discern what will translate at the next level given that Summer League is pretty much a glorified scrimmage. However, there were two drives by Hernandez that were genuinely eye-catching for a near 7-footer. It’s rare for bigs to show that level of dexterity and mobility, and it suggests that Hernandez could have some potential as a power forward. Although, to be fair, he also tossed up a pair of airballs, so there’s clearly room for improvement.

Seven — Malcolm Miller continued his strong showing against the Knicks with yet another positive outing. He traded words with Brian Bowen early in the game, but got his revenge later on by pulling up for three in Bowen’s eye for his fourth trey of the game. Miller continues to find success on his drives to the rim, although that’s likely a reflection of the competition as he’s not particularly explosive or crafty.

Eight — Chris Boucher sat out for rest and showed up pre-game wearing a Bobby Boucher jersey. He’s having an incredible Summer League on and off the court.

Nine — Miscellaneous notes: Darius Thompson continues to be a positive contributor and warrants an extended look ... Lindell Wigginton’s lack of size is a major deterrent and it doesn’t seem as if he’s confident in his jumper ... Matt Morgan made a pair of slick passes along the baseline.

Ten — The Raptors continue to hold a strong presence in Vegas. Senior advisor Wayne Embry sat courtside beside Masai Ujiri, Bobby Webster and Nick Nurse. Newcomers Stanley Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson were also in attendance.
