10 NFL free agents who could help 2024 teams in the season's second half
We're already halfway through the 2024 NFL season, and we're beginning to see what roster strengths teams have and what roster weaknesses could hold them back.
While the 2024 NFL trade deadline has passed, it's not too late to sign a free-agent veteran who isn't with a team right now. Interestingly enough, there are some solid players without a team right now.
We've picked 10 players who could help various NFL teams as the season goes on, as veterans have stepped in during past seasons and helped a good bit for the back half. Let's see who they are and where they might fit.
RB Latavius Murray
Murray played for the Bills last season, totaling 300 rushing yards and four touchdowns for Buffalo in 16 games to go with 119 receiving yards. The Dallas Cowboys could use more pop in the run game, for example.
WR Jamal Agnew
Agnew could thrive in the dynamite return game, helping any contending team that needs more of a spark in special teams. He also fills a solid depth role on offense. The Kansas City Chiefs should inquire. He could help that team's quest for a three-peat in two phases of the game.
WR Richie James
James is a bit like Agnew. He provides a real impact in the return game and can also assist on offense in a depth role at receiver. The Philadelphia Eagles might be a good landing spot.
T Donovan Smith
Smith won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs last winter. He's a solid left tackle who can bring veteran experience to any offensive line. The New England Patriots are starting rookie quarterback Drake Maye, and Smith would be a solid left tackle for him to finish this season.
G Halapoulivaati Vaitai
Vaitai played for the Detroit Lions last season and should be on any team's list that needs help at guard right now. The Houston Texans in particular should consider giving him a call.
OLB Jason Pierre-Paul
Pierre-Paul is reportedly a possible option for teams post-trade deadline, having played as recently as last December with the Miami Dolphins for a handful of games. His last full season was in 2022 with the Baltimore Ravens, where he posted three sacks. Maybe he can offer a rotational spark for a team like the Atlanta Falcons?
DT Mike Purcell
Purcell spent some time with the New England Patriots in August and has been a reliable run defender throughout his NFL career. The Washington Commanders could be a good fit.
DE Shaq Lawson
Lawson played a rotational role with the Bills last season and spent some time with the Carolina Panthers last month. The Bills might could use him back for a late-season push.
CB Patrick Peterson
Peterson is one of the best cornerbacks of his generation, but he's still a free agent this season. The Chiefs need more help in the secondary, and this is our favorite fit on the list.
S Micah Hyde
Hyde is a steady presence in any secondary and was a mainstay on the Buffalo defense since 2017. Perhaps the Cincinnati Bengals could bring him in for a playoff push?
