1-2! Team USA Swimmer Torri Huske Edges Out Gretchen Walsh for 100-Meter Gold Medal After Walsh Set Olympic Record

It marks the first time since 1984 that Team USA has gone one and two in the women’s 100-meter butterfly

American swimmers are going for gold!

During a nail-biting race at the 2024 Paris Olympics, American Torri Huske beat the competition for a first-place spot atop the podium, with Huske even edging out Team USA teammate Gretchen Walsh just one day after her record-setting swim.

Huske, 21, won the women’s 100-meter butterfly race, beating out Walsh, also 21, by .04 seconds in an exhilarating race that saw the latter take second place.

The wins — which mark the first time in 40 years that Team USA has gone one and two in the women’s 100-meter butterfly — came just one day after Walsh broke the Olympic record in the same event’s semifinals with a time of 55.38 seconds (Huske came in second during that race).

"When I hit the wall, I was like, 'Ouch, that hurt for sure,'" Walsh told reporters after the race. "But I think I executed the race as best as I could. I left it all out there in the pool. It might not have been the time that I was necessarily looking for, but to even medal at my first-ever Olympics is something that I don't think many people get to say, and I'm honored. Truly, I'm so proud of Torri. I think that she has worked so hard for that."

The duo, along with Kate Douglass and Simone Manuel, won silver in the women’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay on Saturday, and Huske previously won a silver medal in Tokyo in the 4x100-meter medley relay.

Lilly King, who came in third Sunday night for the 100-meter breaststroke semifinals, told PEOPLE after her race that seeing Huske and Walsh take home wins made her emotional.

"Torri never gets emotional like that, so I was definitely trying to keep it together before my race," she said. "But it's been a long time coming for those girls, and I'm just really, really proud."

Carson Foster, 22, also took home a win, snagging bronze in the men’s 400-meter individual medley final in his first-ever Games.

So did Nic Fink, 31, who tied for silver alongside Great Britain's Adam Peaty in the men's 100-meter breaststroke final.
