Blue Jays blow 8-1 lead to Mariners in Game 2, ending season in heartbreaking fashion

The Toronto Blue Jays’ season ended in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday as the Seattle Mariners stormed back from an 8-1 deficit to win Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series 10-9.

Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman turned things over to the bullpen in the sixth inning with a seven-run advantage but the relief corps couldn’t hold the lead. The turning point in the game came in the eighth inning when the Mariners scored three runs on a game-tying single to shallow centre field that saw the Blue Jays’ George Springer and Bo Bichette collide. Springer was carted off the field with an injury after the play.

Seattle broke the 9-9 tie in the ninth inning on an Adam Frazier RBI double. Carlos Santana also provided a big blow for the Mariners, hitting a three-run home run off Tim Mayza in the sixth.

Outfielder Teoscar Hernández led the way offensively for Toronto, blasting two home runs and driving in four runs. Catcher Danny Jansen added a pair of RBIs.
