Hurricanes acquire Brent Burns in trade with Sharks

Brent Burns is headed to Carolina.

In one of the more consequential moves of the entire offseason, the San Jose Sharks are shipping the veteran defenseman to the Hurricanes with Lane Pederson in exchange for Steven Lorentz, a conditional third-round pick and goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi. San Jose will retain 33 percent of Burns' current $8 million salary to facilitate the deal, meaning it will cost the Hurricanes a shade less than $5.5 million to roll out the former Norris Trophy winner for the next three seasons.

Burns is coming off a few quiet seasons with the Sharks, who have taken a sizeable step back after many seasons of competitiveness. He still managed to score 10 goals and tallied 54 points last season, remaining productive into his late 30s.

He will take the place of Tony DeAngelo on the right side of the defence corps after the Hurricanes chose to let the high-volume point-producer exit in free agency. Carolina should be confident in Burns's ability to match that production in a similarly sheltered defensive role, as he slides in behind Brett Pesce on the depth chart.

Meanwhile, the Sharks are turning the page from a previous era under new general manager Mike Grier. It will be interesting to see if they can continue packaging away assets with veterans such as Logan Couture, Erik Karlsson, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic still soaking up much of the cap space. Timo Meier is also one season removed from restricted free agency.
