Bristol City joke about Owen rumors, really wants Rooney

In the wake of England goalkeeper David James' surprising move to Championship side Bristol City, the club's profile has been raised to the point where papers are eagerly spreading tales of other big-name players joining their ranks. The one rumor with the most legs so far has been Michael Owen joining the Robins on loan from Manchester United. Needless to say, Bristol City manager Steve Coppell isn't buying it.

From BCFC's official website:

[B]oss Steve put a halt to those rumours when quizzed this morning. "It's fantasy island stuff," he told the BBC.

He added on Player: "I try to ignore reports like this but of course people will ask me the questions."

The manager continued with sarcasm and a big grin: "We've tried for Rooney, Ronaldo and Messi but they haven't returned our calls yet.

"We [are having] discussions with Michael Owen about travelling down in his helicopter but it's not come to anything."

Well, we know that Michael Owen is far too busy giving enthusiastic helicopter tours of the middle east to be flying Bristol City around, but Coppell shouldn't give up on landing Rooney just yet. Between that World Cup embarrassment and his Fergie-infuriating late-night boozing and smoking, he might be ready for a drop down to the Championship before long.
