Young boy does radio call of Blues playoff game for blind dad (Video)

It was only for a few minutes, but Wyatt Nelson’s time behind the mic calling Game 2 of Tuesday night’s St. Louis Blues-San Jose Sharks game was a hit.

Last week, a video featuring 12-year-old Wyatt and his father, Gerry, went viral as part of the “Discover Card Day with the Cup” campaign. It showed how hockey was a bond between father and son with Wyatt acting as play-by-play man for Gerry, who lost his eye sight 28 years ago due to diabetes.

The video ended with the two getting a chance meeting with the Stanley Cup after a Saskatoon Blades game.

Former Blues player and current KMOX radio analyst Kelly Chase saw the video and he and general manager Doug Armstrong called the Nelson’s recently to invite them to an upcoming playoff game.

After arriving, the Nelson’s had a whirlwind of a day on Tuesday, from attending the morning skate to meeting Blues assistant GM and goaltending legend Martin Brodeur to the ultimate opportunity of calling part of the Blues-Sharks game with radio man Chris Kerber.

Wyatt’s play-by-play impressed the great Doc Emrick, who called the future play-by-play man and his dad after the youngster’s time behind the mic to offer his congratulations.

"At 12 years old, I don't think I could have done what he just did, not in front of that many people and on the air,” Gerry told NHL.com’s Shawn Roarke afterward. “Calling a Western Hockey League game is one thing; the NHL is something entirely different. I'm so proud of him. I think he just rocked it.”

Unfortunately Wyatt couldn’t call a Blues goal as the Sharks evened the series at one with a 4-0 shutout, but this experience was a great first step in what could be a budding broadcasting career for the kid.
