NHL Three Stars: Seguin tricks Jackets; Kessel wins for Leafs

No. 1 Star: Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars 

Seguin came into the Dallas Stars’ game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with no goals on the season. He now has three, after tallying a hat trick in their 4-2 win. Jamie Benn scored his first, as did Ryan Johansen, who scored twice in a losing cause.

No. 2 Star: Phil Kessel, Toronto Maple Leafs

Phil The Thrill’s overtime beauty, a video-game like move that beat Semyon Varlamov, gave the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

No. 3 Star: Jaroslav Halak, New York Islanders              

Halak made 40 saves, including 20 in the second period, allowing the Islanders to blow open the game in the third period for a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers. Rick Nash scored his fifth and sixth goals in the loss.

Honorable Mention: The Philadelphia Flyers grabbed a point against the Anaheim Ducks, but fell in the shootout for a 4-3 loss. Wayne Simmonds scored his fifth. … Crazy game between the San Jose Sharks and the Washington Capitals, as the Sharks blew a 3-0 lead (yeah, we know) but won in the shootout on a Joe Pavelski goal. Alex Ovechkin had two goals in the loss. Matt Irwin scored twice for San Jose in the 6-5 win … The Buffalo Sabres got a goal from Zemgus Girgensons in Round 8 of the shootout to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3. Marcus Foligno had two goals in regulation for the Sabres. … Mike Cammalleri scored his fourth and Cory Schneider made 26 saves in the New Jersey Devils’ 2-1 over the Tampa Bay Lightning. … The Calgary Flames got a shootout goal from Joe Colborne and edged the Nashville Predators, 3-2. … Jamie Benn had a Gordie Howe hat trick... The 70s Line struck again, as Tanner Pearson, Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli combined for four goals in the Los Angeles Kings’ 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Dishonorable Mention: Marc Staal was a minus-3. … John Carlson was a minus-4, while Brooks Orpik was a minus-3. … Braden Holtby was pulled after giving up four goals on seven shots. … Andrej Sekera was injured in the Canes’ loss. … Filip Forsberg was given a penalty for embellishment. … Viktor Fasth left with an injury after giving up three goals on 11 shots. … Nail Yakupov and Leon Draisaitl were a minus-3.:
