Pass or Fail: The home and away jerseys for the Winnipeg Jets

As soon as True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the Atlanta Thrashers in May, the two most anticipated aspects of the new "Winnipeg" team were whether or not they would again be called the "Jets" and, if they were to be the "Jets", would the old logo make a return.

After handing out a generic NHL jersey to their draft picks in June -- and a straight up blank one if you're Carl Klingberg at the NHL Rookie Showcase last month -- and releasing the team logos in July, the Winnipeg Jets finally unveiled their new home and away jerseys today at a military base from a scene straight out of "Top Gun":

They do look somewhat similar to the counterfeit jerseys that were floating around in the past month, don't they?

From the Jets:

The jerseys consist largely of two shades of blue. The primary navy blue base of the home dark jerseys is referred to as "Polar Night Blue" which is found on many of today's Royal Canadian Air Force planes, including the Dash 8. The lighter, secondary blue is called "Aviator Blue" which is similar to the historical colours by used the RCAF, including traditional RCAF flags and the jerseys of the 1948 RCAF Flyers. The jersey also features the previously unveiled primary logo on the front, with the secondary logo placed on the shoulders of each jersey.

"We wanted to create a look that worked well with Reebok's modern and innovative "Edge System" uniforms," said Kevin Cheveldayoff, Executive Vice-President & General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets. "However, it was also vitally important to us to honour the rich history of hockey in our city, and fit the era of the Royal Canadian Air Force which inspired the primary crest design. The result is clean, simple and traditional."

"Our men and women in uniform are delighted by the gracious manner in which the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club has sought to pay tribute to our time-honoured relationship with this city," said Colonel Blaise Frawley, Commander of 17 Wing. "Today's announcement at our home in Winnipeg certainly lends a boost to our morale."

The Jets will wear their new threads for the first time on Sept. 20 during split-squad exhibition games in Winnipeg and Columbus against the Blue Jackets. If you want to get your hands on one of these jerseys, the team is currently taking pre-orders, but they won't be available until early October.

As much as we would have liked to have the Jets return to their previous jerseys for the full nostalgic effect, we'll give these a bit of a pass, although the shoulder yoke and arm/waist stripes seems a bit much.

What say you? Are these Jets 2.0 jerseys good enough for your liking?
