Panthers acquire Jiri Hudler, Jakub Kindl, Teddy Purcell for picks

The Florida Panthers are currently second in the Eastern Conference and atop the Atlantic Division with 22 games to go. That standing means GM Dale Tallon is going to do whatever he can to bolster his lineup before Monday’s trade deadline.

In a trio of moves made Saturday afternoon while his team played, Tallon acquired Jiri Hudler from the Calgary Flames for a 2017 second-round pick and a 2018 fourth rounder, Teddy Purcell from the Edmonton Oilers for a 2016 third-round pick and Jakub Kindl from the Detroit Red Wings for a 2017 sixth-round pick. Detroit will also retain 15-percent ($360,000) of Kindl's $2.4 million cap hit/salary this season and next, per General Fanager.

Hudler has 10 goals and 35 points in 53 games this season, one year removed from a 31-goal campaign. February has been a good month for him as he’s recorded 11 points in 12 games. He’ll join fellow Czech Jaromir Jagr in South Florida.

The Oilers scratched Purcell for their last two games in hopes of making a deal. The 30-year-old forward has 11 goals and 32 points in 61 games.

Kindl has been waived twice by the Red Wings this season. In 25 games this season he's recorded eight points and averaged 16:27 of ice time per game.

While the Panthers are strengthening for a postseason run, the Flames and Oilers are looking toward the future and selling off their assets while they can. The Hudler deal is a nice return for a pending UFA, and it’s possible Kris Russell and David Jones, among others, join him on their way out of Calgary by Monday’s deadline. Meanwhile, Edmonton GM Peter Chiarelli is still hoping to find a new home for defenseman Justin Schultz.

On the Milbury Scale:

ONE MILBURY. The Panthers add some depth up front and in the back, while the Flames and Oilers acquire assets for players they were looking to dump. The Red Wings also open up $2 million in cap space for next season.
