Oklahoma City Barons AHL playoff game postponed due to tornado; locker room flooded (Photos)
The Oklahoma City Barons were scheduled to play Game 4 of the AHL Western Conference Final on Friday night against the Grand Rapids Griffins. But instead of filling the stands to watch playoff hockey, fans were ushered down to the underground parking garage of Cox Convention Center as more dangerous, tornadic storms ravaged the area.
The game was postponed until Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT with Game 5 pushed to Sunday at 4 p.m. CT. The postponement was due to flooding inside the arena related to the storm, which featured a tornado west of the city. From the AHL:
With the Oklahoma City metro area under a tornado emergency, the arena was evacuated and all occupants were moved to safety in the parking garage beneath the Cox Convention Center at approximately 6:45 p.m. local time. After nearly 90 minutes, everyone was permitted to return to the building but it was determined that in the best interests of fans, players, officials and staff, the game would not be played as scheduled.
According to The Oklahoman, a “major water leak” was discovered in the ceiling of the radio booth inside the arena, with water “spewing a steady stream down the steps toward the rink.” Fans were kept inside the arena as the severe weather continued outside.
