Oilers extend Cam Talbot with 3-year, $12.5 million deal

Step right up, Cam Talbot, you’re the next contestant on “Who Wants To Be the Edmonton Oilers Solution In Goal?”

The Oilers dealt for Talbot from the New York Rangers during last June’s draft and on Sunday extended the 28-year old netminder with a three-year, $12.5 million deal, according to Chris Johnston.

Talbot was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and given the interest shown in him at the draft, he would have had no issue finding a home.

In 26 appearances this season, Talbot has posted a .912 even strength save percentage and recorded one shutout. As Jonathan Willis points out over at Oilers Nation, Talbot's career numbers when he was in New York were solid, but he's only shown glimpses of that in Edmonton this season.

It’s a risky move by GM Peter Chiarelli, even with Talbot’s solid play of late (he’s allowed two goals or less in seven of his last 10 starts) and ability to get on hot streaks. The recent history of goaltenders in Edmonton isn’t very pretty, which means this could end up being another one for the scrap heap.
