NHL Three Stars: Avalanche, Sharks suffer first losses; Luongo blanks Sabres
This looks like a total accident.
No. 1 Star: Daniel Alfredsson, Detroit Red Wings
Alfie led the way for the Red Wings, picking up 3 assists in a 4-2 win over the previously-perfect Colorado Avalanche, and ruining Patrick Roy's bid at sole possession of the longest unbeaten streak from a new NHL coach. 2 of those assists came in the third period, when the Red Wings broke a 2-2 tie with two goals to get the two points. No. 2 Star: Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators
Karlsson contributed three points in the Senators' 5-2 rout of the New Jersey Devils. He scored the opener, then assisted on two more in his game-high 27:15 of ice time. The Sens were also helped by this slick save from Craig Anderson:
No. 3 Star: Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks
In a sense, Luongo couldn't give this shutout away. He should have been burned twice, but the Sabres saw two goals slip away from them due to bad luck -- one when Thomas Vanek hit the crossbar in alone, and another when a Luongo turnover behind the net was blocked by Ryan Stanton in front of it -- and the Vancouver Canucks' goaltender earned his first shutout of the year. He made 25 saves in the 3-0 win.
Honorable mention: Jonathan Quick stopped 35 and Anze Kopitar's shootout goal gave the Los Angeles Kings a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators... The St. Louis Blues' top line was the difference in their 3-2 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks. David Backes and Alex Steen both scored their fifth of the season and T.J. Oshie notched the lone shootout tally... Tim Thomas made 40 stops, but it wasn't enough as the Boston Bruins took the reunion game,3-2... Steven Stamkos's 5th was the difference as the Tampa Bay Lighthing improved to 5-2 on the season with a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Wild... Alex Chiasson scored the shootout winner as the Dallas Stars ended the San Jose Sharks' unbeaten streak to open the season, 4-3. Good on the Stars to keep coming after the Sharks opened the scoring just nine seconds in:
... Boone Jenner scored his first two career goals for the Columbus Blue Jackets, but it wasn't enough as the Montreal Canadiens skated to a 5-3 victory... The Carolina Hurricanes scored three times in the third period -- including once by Ryan Murphy, his first career goal -- to storm back and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2... Taylor Hall scored twice really fast but the New York Islanders overcame it for a 3-2 win... Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin had two-point nights as the Pittsburgh Penguins sent the Philadelphia Flyers to 1-7-0, winning 4-1...
Did You Know? When reached for comment on Taylor Hall scoring twice in eight seconds, breaking his franchise record for the fastest two goals by one Oiler, Wayne Gretzky joked, "If Kevin Lowe would have got me the puck quicker it would have been seven seconds."
Dishonorable mention: The Sabres were just awful Thursday night... Cody McLeod deserves a very lengthy suspension for his hit on Niklas Kronwall... James Reimer played just 32 seconds of the Leafs game before teammate Josh Leivo ran him over and sent him to the locker room, and Jonathan Bernier made sure the Toronto fans missed him with this gaffe... The Sabres just can't buy a break right now:
