NHL Three Stars: Lundqvist, Stepan lead Rangers; Berube stops Sens
No. 1 Star: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
Following a five-game losing streak, Lundqvist has now won his last two starts as New York beat the Boston Bruins 5-2. He stopped 39 during Wednesday’s victory, the fifth time in his last 10 starts he’s needed to make 35-plus saves. Lundqvist also picked up an assist on Stepan’s goal and made a highlight-reel stop on Lee Stempniak that may have been a goal:
No. 2 Star: J.F. Berube, New York Islanders
Berube stopped 22 shots and Matt Martin and Brock Nelson scored 21 seconds apart in the first period as the Islanders downed the Ottawa Senators 3-1. Two of Berube’s 22 stops came during this sequence which ended with a glove save on Mark Stone:
No. 3 Star: Derek Stepan, New York Rangers
Stepan’s goal and two assists helped the Rangers move four points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins in second place in the Metropolitan Division.
Honorable Mention: John Tavares tallied his 27th of the season to open the scoring as New York ended a four-game slide. The captain now has 13 points in his last 10 games at Barclays Center … Erik Karlsson recorded his 62nd assist of the season, tops in the NHL … Bobby Ryan hit the 600-game mark of his career … Keith Yandle chipped in a pair of first-period assists for the Rangers, including a lovely individual effort to help set up Stepan’s goal:
