NHL 3 Stars: Shutouts for Lundqvist, Enroth; Stars win fifth straight

According to the NESN broadcast, the Carolina Hurricanes' powerplay is so bad, it transcends the 30-team NHL. [Reddit]

No. 1 Star: Brenden Morrow, Pittsburgh Penguins

Morrow was in on all 3 goals in the Penguins 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers, assisting on the first, scoring the second, then icing the game with an empty-netter. Beau Bennett added two assists as well.

No. 2 Star: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

It was a goaltender's duel on Long Island, and Lundqvist came out on top, making 29 saves for the 1-0 overtime victory. Dan Girardi was the unlikely hero, converting after a slick little saucer pass from Derick Brassard:

No. 3 Star: Jhonas Enroth, Buffalo Sabres

Enroth stopped all 29 shots he faced to stake the Sabres to a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Honourable mention: Richard Bachman made 31 saves and the Dallas Stars won their 5th in a row, 2-1, over the San Jose Sharks. Alex Chiasson scored again, giving him 6 goals in 6 NHL games. With the win, the Stars moved into a three-way tie for 8th place in the West... Sergei Bobrovsky made 39 saves as the Columbus Blue Jackets edged the Minnesota Wild, 3-2, in a shootout. The two points helped the BJs join the Red Wings and Wild in eighth in the West. Jason Pominville had a two-point night for Minnesota... Mike Green had the lethal tough Saturday. Not only did he destroy Nate Thompson's visor, but he crushed the overtime winner in the Washington Capitals' 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Alex Ovechkin added his 27th of the year:

Richard Panik had a three-point night in the loss... The Colorado Avalanche came back to beat the Vancouver Canucks for the first time in 10 games. Jan Hejda's first goal of the season made it 4-3 with 7.6 seconds remaining... Justin Peters made 28 saves (one of them of the spectacular variety) as the Carolina Hurricanes topped the Boston Bruins, 4-2... Jay McClement had a goal and an assist and James Reimer made 36 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Montreal Canadiens, 5-1... Max Reinhart scored his first NHL goal in the Calgary Flames' 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers... Mike Richards' powerplay goal late in the second stood up as the game-winner in the Los Angeles Kings' 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

Did You Know? The Maple Leafs only had 5 shots on goal in the first period versus Montreal. They scored four times. The last team to have that kind of first was the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct 25, 1990, versus the Quebec Nordiques. [Kevin Gibson]

Dishonourable mention: Steve Mason will probably have nightmares about the game-winner in the Flyers' loss to the Sabres. It comes off the boards, then banks off his skate and in:

Carey Price was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 4 shots... Charlie Coyle received a match penalty for this hit to Artem Anisimov, which sure looks shoulder on shoulder from this angle. Will the league rescind? Will they produce another, more damning angle and suspend?
