Linesman accidentally tosses Corban Knight's first NHL goal puck into stands (Video)
The Calgary Flames routed the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night by a surprising 7-2 score. The home side had built up a 5-0 lead by early in the second period, so the game was over very early into the night.
Mikael Backlund was the game's first star with a three-point effort, but the highlight was Corban Knight's first NHL goal, which gave the Flames their final tally of the night. Whether it was the first or last one, Knight didn't care.
“It was the seventh goal but, for me, it felt like an overtime winner with how I felt after that,” Knight said afterward.
He might have felt a little down had Backlund not come to the rescue a little later. You see, after Knight scored his goal, linesman Lonnie Cameron tossed the puck into the Saddledome stands to a young fan, unaware of the milestone for the Flames rookie. Oops.
Last summer, during the floods in Calgary, Knight's home was destroyed and he lost much of his hockey memorabilia, including awards, trophies and milestone pucks from his youth.
Fortunately for Knight, he did end up with this puck for safe keeping after Backlund recorded his biggest assist of the night by trading his stick for it.
UPDATE: Backlund claims he didn't trade his stick for it. Hopefully we get to the bottom of that mystery on Thursday.
