Johnny Gaudreau surprises child who lost home in Fort McMurray fire (Video)

Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau gave a special birthday gift to a boy who lost his home in the Fort McMurray wildfire.

The moment was posted by the Flames on Friday of Gaudreau video chatting with young Liam Watson for his ninth birthday.

According to Liam's mother Sabrina, her son lost trophies, pictures, a Wayne Gretzky signed card and brand new goalie gear with a brand new Star Wars helmet in the fire.

After the Watsons lost their home Sabrina called the Flames, knowing Gaudreau was her son's favorite player, and asked them if Gaudreau was going to be at any local autograph signings in the near future. The organization went much further.

Part of the gift pack sent by Gaudreau and the Flames included, a Calgary hat, a puck signed by Gaudreau, a No. 13 Gaudreau T-shirt, a picture and a Gaudreau hockey card.

The Watsons are currently staying with family in Spruce Grove, which is where the gifts were sent. They found a new home, but can't move there until August. Sabrina got the call about the gifts and video chat as she and her family were shopping for new furniture in IKEA.

The most touching moment was when Watson showed Gaudreau a hockey player figurine.

“I got a figurine,”  Liam boasted.

“Whoa look at that! Who’s that on there?” Gaudreau asked.

“That’s you!” Liam coolly said.

This led to laughter from Watson, Gaudreau and all parties in the room.

"When we had talked about it, we gave him the heads up to talk to Johnny. He almost cried because he was so nervous," Sabrina said. "It was really scary, but that’s why (Johnny) had those questions because he was afraid (Liam) wasn’t able to speak with him.

The hockey world has rallied around the victims of Fort McMurray since the town was evacuated in early May.

According to Global News, the wildfire torched 2,400 homes and buildings and forced 80,000 residents to leave town.

As of Thursday, the wildfire was “still considered out of control, but wasn’t threatening any communities.”

The Blues supported forward Scottie Upshall, a Fort McMurray native, during the crisis and Upshall has done his best to raise awareness for Fort McMurray.

The San Jose Sharks hosted a fan who lost his Fort McMurray home, but saved his Sharks jerseys.

NHL teams, including the Flames and Edmonton Oilers have donated money to the Fort McMurray relief efforts. Through Flames captain Mark Giordano, a lot of Calgary’s players have made personal donations as well.
