Demers was given a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct on the play. Bonino exited the game. The play came at the 16:48 mark of the third period of the Stars’ 4-1 victory over the Penguins on Thursday.

Said Demers according to the Dallas Morning News:

"I just mistimed it. I hope he's all right," Demers said. "I just tried to counter-hit, and it was a little bit too early. It wasn't malicious."

Said Stars coach Lindy Ruff via the Dallas Morning News:

"The Demers play was just reaction to getting hit," Ruff said. "I didn't find anything bad about it."

The eyeball test looks bad for Demers, who definitely threw his arm out and whacked Bonino in the face. But the 27-year-old blueliner isn’t exactly known as a dirty player.

Demers has not been suspended in his career. He had two penalty minutes in the six games leading up to Thursday’s contest. Last season he had 71 penalty minutes in 81 games played.

UPDATE: Demers will have a hearing with the DoPS on Friday.
