Ilya Bryzgalov to join Anaheim Ducks on a tryout

It’s been way too long without Ilya Bryzgalov in our lives.

After being invited to training camp with the Minnesota Wild, Bryzgalov was released just before the season began. Since early October, Mr. Universe has been passed over while other netminders received opportunities around the league.

Enter the Anaheim Ducks.

John Gibson’s on IR. Jason LaBarbera was placed on IR a few days ago. Dwayne Roloson is only used in emergency situations. Anaheim could use some depth in goal. So why not reach out to an old, old friend?

According to ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun, Bryzgalov will join the Ducks this week in a tryout role, similar to what Martin Brodeur just went through with the St. Louis Blues, with the goal of a contract being hammered by both sides.

There's plenty of familiarity between Bryzgalov and the Ducks. He began his career in Anaheim, spending five years with the organization, playing 69 games in the NHL before moving on to the Phoenix Coyotes.

It was in Anaheim that Bryzgalov gave us one of the most memorable soundbites of all-time:

Frederik Andersen and Igor Bobkov have 48 games of NHL experience between, with all 48 on Andersen's side of the ledger. Gibson is out until later this month and LaBarbera is out 2-3 weeks with an upper-body injury. Bryzgalov's experience and familiarity with the organization will help as the Ducks fight their way through the current injjury crisis affecting their crease.
