Gustav Nyquist’s big night helps him earn stay with Red Wings

It was a numbers game that kept Gustav Nyquist in the AHL. So when he finally got his opportunity Thursday night, he put home a pair of goals, helping the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

It was the numbers game with the Red Wings' salary cap situation and their roster size that handcuffed general manager Ken Holland from recalling the 24-year old Swede. When Danny DeKeyser went down with a separated shoulder earlier this week, the door opened for Nyquist and he didn't waste any time proving his case to stay:

On Friday, Holland made it official by saying that Nyquist would remain up with the Red Wings and play Saturday night against the Senators.

"He's here for the year."

That was a key point in the debate over Nyquist's future. By playing Saturday night, he will have to pass through waivers if the Red Wings are to send him back to Grand Rapids of the AHL. His combination of speed and skill would most certainly be scooped up by another NHL team should he have to hit the waiver wire.

Now Nyquist can feel secure with his current living situation and maybe keep a close eye on his first goal puck.
