Flyers sign Matt Read to four-year, $14.5 million extension
Matt Read was approaching the 2013-14 season knowing it was the final year of his first NHL deal. Talk about his future was something he tried to avoid this summer, with his mind focused on getting ready for the season.
Well, just days into training camp, Read won't have to worry about his status with the Philadelphia Flyers after this year. On Friday, he signed a four-year, $14.5 million extension with the team. He'll have a $3.625 cap hit.
“We’re excited and happy we finally got this done,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “This has been going on for the better part of the summer. We’re happy and I’m sure Matt’s happy. He’s one of the young, core players on our team.”

“I’m pretty excited, very happy and pretty relieved,” said Read. “It’s been an ongoing process, but I’m very happy about it. My first two years have been overwhelming for me. Its crazy that I’m even playing in the NHL, but to get this second contract with this organization is a dream come true. I couldn’t be with a better organization and I’m thrilled to be here for a few more years.”
In case you didn't pick up on it, everyone's excited.
Read entered the NHL in 2011-12 and scored 24 goals and recorded 47 points in his rookie season. He's shown versatility and earned head coach Peter Laviolette's trust enough to play him in all situations.
The Flyers now have eight regular forwards locked up for at least the next three seasons, per CapGeek. (Nine, if rookie Scott Laughton makes the team out of camp.) Brayden Schenn, who's scheduled to be an RFA next summer, will likely join that group at some point this season.
Read, the former Bemidji State product. has come a long way in four years. He's gone from being undrafted and hoping just to get an NHL tryout to contract security and a fatter wallet.
