Dennis Wideman out rest of season with triceps injury

Embattled Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman will miss the remaining 12 games of the NHL regular season due to a triceps injury, the team announced Friday.

Wideman was injured in the first period of Calgary’s Wednesday game against the Winnipeg Jets. Above is a video of Wideman suffering the injury. He seemed to slide into Joe Colborne off the rush that led to a Michael Frolik goal.

It was Wideman’s third game since he returned after sitting out 19 games of a 20-game suspension that was lessened to 10 games after a lengthy appeals process.

Wideman was suspended by NHL hockey operations on Feb. 3 for hitting linesman Don Henderson in the head on Jan. 27. An independent arbitrator lessened the suspension to 10 games, after it was upheld by commissioner Gary Bettman. The 32-year-old Wideman will finish his season with 19 points in 51 games played.

Wideman has one year remaining on a five-year contract that pays him an average $5.25 million per season.

The NHL has said it will continue to pursue “options” on Wideman, but hasn’t said what exactly it will do. Nick Kypreos reported that the NHL could go after Wideman in federal court. Last Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman also noted that the league could take Wideman to the US Court of Appeals.

“We had a view of what happened here and the opinion is pretty clear,” Bettman said. “Obviously the arbitrator had a different view and whether or not that was appropriate is something we’ll continue to examine.”
