Darryl Sittler has the only Hockey Night tape from 10-point game, and you can’t have it

Last week marked the 37th anniversary of Darryl Sittler's remarkable, unmatched 10-point game, a February 7, 1976 thumping of the Boston Bruins in which Sittler dropped a staggering 6 goals and 4 assists as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It's a record that may never be broken, especially the way the game is played nowadays.

You can find highlights of the game on YouTube. But if you're hoping to see the entirety of the most impressive sixty minutes of hockey one man has ever played, you're out of luck.

Sittler has the only tape, and he intends to keep it that way.

According to the Toronto Star, someone at Hockey Night in Canada gave Sittler the tape -- and with it, all the power -- some time ago, and now that he has it, he's not giving it up.

“I got this as a gift and it’s mine to do what I want with it,” Sittler said, when pressed by the paper.

Mine, mine, mine. He's like the seagulls in Finding Nemo.

Sittler clearly relishes the tape, as well as the fact that he's the only one who has it. Not only is he unwilling to relinquish the tape -- he's unwilling to make a copy. His response to being asked if he's duplicate the tape so the world could see it:

"I don't want to go there."

But the best part of this story is the nonchalance with which Sittler discusses this priceless and coveted piece of hockey history. While the Star reports on it at the level of a scandal (and it sort of is, considering the way Canada regards its hockey history), Sittler casually drops that he's not even sure where it is right now. “It could be here or at my cottage in a box,” he told the paper. Or between the seats of my car or maybe under the couch or maybe the dog has it. I don't know. It's somewhere.

Either way, let this be a lesson to everyone involved: don't give anything to Darryl Sittler, unless you never want to see it again.

In the meantime, I guess we'll have to settle for Don Cherry talking about the game. Unsurprisingly, he didn't like the disrespectful way Sittler and the Leafs ran up the score. Of course, he was coaching the Bruins at the time:

No one give this to Sittler.
