Charlotte AHL game closed to the public as winter storm arrives

While a number of sporting events like Friday’s Anaheim Ducks vs. Washington Capitals tilt and two Saturday NBA games have been postponed due to Winter Storm Jonas hitting the east coast, there are still some that are going forward.

In Raleigh, the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes will face off as the snow falls. A few hours west, the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers and Chicago Wolves will drop the puck as scheduled at 7 p.m. ET inside the Bojangles’ Coliseum. There will be one slight difference in those two hockey games in Carolina, however. While the Hurricanes might take a hit in attendance Friday night, the Checkers won’t have to worry about that whatsoever.

You see, due to the weather conditions in the area, the Checkers announced for the safety of their fans and with the Wolves already in town that the game will be played in front of an empty arena.

Fans have been given the option to exchange tickets for Friday’s game for another one later in the season. The game will still be broadcast on AHL Live.

Last April, the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2 in front of an empty Camden Yards following the Freddy Gray protests in the city. We’ve also seen this happen in European soccer as penalties for fan behavior.

At least for the Wolves, this will be one road game where they won't have to worry about hearing the boos.
