Capitals acquire Dustin Penner; Ducks loading up for something bigger?

Not long before the news began to leak out, Anaheim Ducks forward Dustin Penner said goodbye via Twitter emojis:

On National Pancake Day, no less, Penner was dealt to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a fourth round pick. That fourth rounder was immediately used by Ducks general manager Bob Murray in a swap for Stephane Robidas in Dallas.

In 49 games this season, Penner has 13 goals and 32 points.

Joining Penner in leaving Anaheim was goaltender Viktor Fasth, who was sent to Edmonton for two picks. So are these moves Murray making room up top for something bigger? How good would Thomas Vanek look alongside Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf?

For the Capitals, Penner's arrival could fill the void next to Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. At the very least, he'll play a big role in their top six, and Washington will hope he can find his postseason form should they get there.

Capitals GM George McPhee isn't done yet. With the acquisition of Penner and his $2 million cap hit, along with Jack Hillen soon to be off long-term injury reserve, Washington needs to free up some space. Will Martin Erat finally have his trade request fulfilled? At this point, it's a very good bet.
