Welcome to Twitter, Tony Romo! Hope you survive the experience!

Well, this is going to go swimmingly: Tony Romo, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback who takes more grief than every other player in the NFL combined*, has decided to make himself available at the one place on the Internet where every mouthbreathing, interception-joke-making, anti-Cowboys loon has a direct line right into your cell phone.

In other words, welcome to Twitter, Tony Romo.

Technically, Romo joined Twitter back in April 2008. Seven years ago. But his account had remained dormant until late Thursday night, when he offered up the following cryptic first tweet:

Seven years for that? What took you so long, Tony? Predictably, everyone made the same jokes ("his first tweets got intercepted," "Dez dropped his first tweet," etc., etc.) Of course, Romo is used to the abuse; much like his often-times questionable offensive line over the years, protection against rampaging incursion is nonexistent on Twitter.

Most likely, this is some variant of the tweet-as-carrier-pigeon for a new ad campaign of some sort, much like Phil Jackson's fake-garbled first tweet was actually a promo for his latest book. Romo's Twitter bio points to a fantasy football website, which just happens to be the only account he follows.

Hopefully the account will be more than just a marketing churn, though. Romo, for all the grief he gets, lives an absolutely charmed life and appears to be a pretty grounded guy. If he gives people insight into his life and perspective, he could be a fine Twitter follow. Long as he doesn't fumble the phone in key moments, of course. (Sorry.)
