Tim Tebow ‘disappointed’ in being passed over for Jets’ starting quarterback job
On Tuesday, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan made the decision to bench quarterback Mark Sanchez and name 2011 seventh round pick Greg McElroy the starter.
Needless to say, Tim Tebow was disappointed that he wasn't elevated to the top of the depth chart.
"Obviously, I'm a little disappointed,'' Tebow said. ''You try to handle it the best you can.''
Acquired from the Denver Broncos in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft and the agreement that the Jets would repay the Broncos $2.53 million of a salary advance Tebow had received in 2011, Tebow has played in nearly snaps on special teams (59) as he has on offense (71), according to playing-time data tracked by Shutdown Corner.
''I think we had a vision of using Tim in different ways,'' head Rex Ryan said on Monday. ''Obviously, we used him as a personal punt protector. I thought maybe we would use him in other ways or something.''
Tebow has 102 rushing yards on 32 attempts, but has been asked to put the ball in the air just eight times, mostly on short, high-percentage throws, which likely bother the highly-competitive Tebow.
''All you can ask for and all you want is a chance,'' said Tebow. ''A chance to go out there and play the game you love, and help this team win football games. That's all I wanted.''
Asked about his future with the Jets, Tebow said that he would "wait until the end of the season and look at everything then." With the Jets turning the keys to the offense over to McElroy, the next two weeks are likely to be Tebow's last with the franchise, who figure to have a difficult time dealing him as his high salary ($2.586 million) is compounded by $1.53 million remaining in repayments to the Broncos.
